5 Big Mistakes In Social Marketing

by Don Dousharm Entrepreneur, Publisher

I read the other day about making social marketing mistakes and so I decided to make my own list and expand on each one. Hearing your comments on the subject and adding your own to the list is encouraged so without and further delay here is the list.

No Interaction:

How many times have we become friends with others only to add them to the size of our connections? I am a big guilty party for this with my Facebook account. When I first started out with Facebook I was adding people by the hundreds and to this day I have no idea who some of them are.

Here on APSense I have 209 connections and I am in contact with about 50% of them and after writing this article I plan on reaching out and saying hello to the other 50%. This is my plan for helping to build my social media marketing efforts.

No Quality Content:

I write about many subjects and I usually write about my business and what I am involved in at the time. I try to stay focused on what I consider myself to be an authority on or at least have some knowledge about through research and giving credit to the source along the way. I try to stay away from copy & paste unless I am quoting someone and then give credit to the author.

I have seen in the past and even to this day where niche blogs go up and loaded with PLR articles on a specific subject and guess what? I can read the same post on a hundred different article sites and blogs all with different authors. This is not quality content folks. This will make you look like a fool faster than anything and will cause any credibility you may have had go right down the toilet. “Good luck with that!” – Me.

Not Writing Effective Profiles:

I especially love this one. First of all I am not really a fan of building a profile as a business as I never feel like I am associating with a person. This is a big turn off for me when it comes to socializing. Am I interested in your product? Fair enough, I could be but I am not willing to buy from a business I don’t know. I mean it’s not like you are Best Buy or Tiger Direct or anything.

Be yourself and present your business as the person who is knowledgeable and willing to answer questions. Be the authority figure for those of us who need the answers. I would be more apt to be interested in how you and your business can help me because I now have the personal attention of the one who I feel knows best and can best answer my needs.

Be you, add your personal information and let people know who you are as a person before you try to sell them something.

No Visibility:

Dude, you’re on a social network so be social. Get involved, Join in the conversation and become active in groups. Strike up a conversation on a subject that interests you, but be careful to stay on topic when appropriate. You will find that people will respect you as a friend and listen to what you have to say.

Stop Spamming:

Stop doing this, (Hi, I’m your friendly neighborhood spammer and I am just going to throw at you a whole bunch of links that really have nothing to do with anything just to see how many suckers I can grab a hold of.) Hey Man, I hate to break it to you but you are an annoying spammer. Nobody likes you. Nobody is interested in what you are trying to shove down their throats and you won’t be around long because you will either get banned or un-friended.

You would be surprised how many people don’t realize what spam is besides the countless others who are masters at the art. This is the biggest issue in social marketing today and the hardest to combat. If you are new to this Social Marketing game you would be wise to gain an understanding of the rules. Yes I said rules because if you ever want to be respected as a marketer then you need to learn them.

The next time your on your favorite Social Network try and think of these things and help yourself become the master of your own domain. (No pun intended)!
