How to Network & do it effectively!

by Lisa Lomas
I have been at some odds to write this document, simply because we are neck
deep in Social Networks online.

The matter never escapes me however how important it is to implement a few
basic rules when networking with others.

Now for those of you that only have real world (not cyber online as your reference)
you have Joe Bloggs down the road with his Petrol Station.  He has some great clientel
and he networks (or sends work) his mechanical work to Fred who owns the Workshop.
Now this is one form of networking, neither takes away from the other but it makes you the
good guy because you are able to recommend someone.

The Cyber Online world is typically quite the same.  You can find many services that will
compliment each other and this will be of mutual benefit.

I network with many types of people, we have at our Business Webmasters /Business Owners
that have specialised Advertising,  Autoresponders and so on so we can provide more
to our members.  Networking in this way can make you become more at the top of the game.

Now if you are new to any of this endeavour, you may be scared or nervous.  Its a whole new
world but really its no different than what you do going down to your local grocery store.

You walk in and talk nicely, if they know you as a regular its quite friendly and maybe even
a bit of laughter and sharing stories.  Being online does not have to be any different.  The
only difference may be that there is quite a few oceans in between.  Essentially we cyber
walk to our stops and bump into others along the way.

Now the variant Described as Social Networking is more a Junior fun mode of Networking.
The benefits can vary.

The benefits can range from business right through to shared hobbies.  So the fun can be
there.  The only difference is you can block that person at any time.

Ok so this is the mutual benefit part, and so how do you do this effectively now you may
wonder?

Quite simply you search into areas your interested in.  Your brand name, your alias, your
real name all have a part to play and its very good to have some forethought and use
the same alias wherever you go.

This means is quite simple.   The big time user involved is your Setting up your Profile.  This
is your virtual handshake to the outside world.  To be informative but also nagging in the
back of our heads the need to be safe.  (Hence why alias is great).

Here are some Points to Consider:
-Putting up a personal picture of yourself, (not a logo or some pretty picture).
-Explaining your philosophies.
-Give someone a great introduction to you however you are most comfortable
doing so but keeping it real.
-Make sure Hobbies are there (great for online searching on sites)
-A nice looking page for yourself that shows your personality is great.

No matter what you do remember you are having a real person on the other
end of the computer.

Common politeness, courtesies, kindness is always remembered.  Cyber Ediquette
is extremely important and this will be remembered.

The rude person will also be remembered but not in a nice way, in a way you will
not be listened to or acknowledged or recieved.

The Social Networking Scene I have only discussed a few points to consider, I do
know it takes time and effort and involves some one on one conversations.  This
does create trust and relationship which is a positive result with Social Networking.

There are some safety factors to remember.  Use a alias, there will be some freaky
dudes and dudesses you must be a little prudent.  If wishing to continue contact,
use a Messenger at first, this gives you control.  Make sure they do have a way
to contact but you may wish to keep it on site, which is the best way!

I hope you remember to be nice!

Well put. As a webmaster,photographer,marketer,advertiser...blah blah blah. you get the point. I am involved in several social sites. Their rules may vary a bit but are all basically the same. What is pointed out here is GREAT advice for using ANY social site. THANKS for this discussion.
