New Year's Resolutions and why they may not work

by Janet Matthews Health and Nutrition Writer
I was inspired to write this blog after reading Joseph Botelho's blog entitled    "New Year's Resolutions. What are some of yours?"

New Year's resolutions, for me are somewhat akin to the concept of goal setting, where the achievement or otherwise is generally measured in success or failure. Immediately I hear alarm bells ringing and my gut reaction is to avoid them like the plague. Having been a teacher in "a previous life" I am only too aware of the devastating affects of the success/failure conundrum and so feel compelled to question its relative merits.

For my own part I have, like countless others, made New Years resolutions in the past, only to find that I either didn't stick to them or that circumstances changed and they ceased to be either important or appropriate.

Resolutions would appear to be self imposed goals that may or may not be what is best for us at a particular moment in time. These goals become external projections of what we "think" we should be doing. Perhaps if we could change our focus and just concentrate on what is the right thing to do at that specific moment in time we may be more "successful".

Living in the present moment is indeed a resolution in itself. If we follow our gut instincts moment by moment we will become more aware of our daily needs and more likely to live our lives in closer harmony with ourselves.

Goal setting involves thinking and thinking creates conflict, as a decision has to be made. If we resolve to follow our instincts we will know what is required at that moment in time

Self knowledge can be quite a scarey phenomena but I believe it is the key to truly feeling at one with ourselves in all that we do.

I appreciate that much of what I have said here is quite controversial, especially in this task oriented internet business world. I would therefore welcome your thoughts on this topic

Well thought out Janet, glad l made you think about the above and how you feel. Yes goals do take more time to clearly out line them in way they have the same impact. Most of us say we are going to make some Resolution on New Years Eve only cause will feel that we should almost to a certain degree feel guility, if we feel we will never achieve them........We are programmed in a way that we follow but we never really put the real effort in making them come true............Not all of us but most of us have that want to make the changes we come up with and know it will benefit us in the long term...............but we slip or we lose focus and they become forgotten and never achieve............When we take the time to set our goals and if we do it correctly and write them down and review them on a daily bases then our chances of accomplishing our goals beomce more real..............Same as Resolution if we honestly take the time to write them out and honestly treat them like a burning desire to achieve them then are odds increase on achieving them.................It all boils down to how we prepare and program our mind and how important them resolutions our to ones self..............We can acomplish anything that our minds want to achieve it all boils down to how we react and trat our goals or rsolutions................Hope this makes sense to you and all who read this comment.................

Hi Joseph - thanks for the comments.

I am sure you are right that we can achieve whatever we put our minds to, but i think what I was trying to say was we often don't know in advance whether those goals will be right for us in the future. We can only decide in the moment. Quite thought provoking don't you think

Hi Janet,

Yes it is and can be thought provoked.............it all depends on the person and how or she will react to her goals or desires...........We all react differently, we all have wants, needs and desires and things we would like to improve on but many never achieve them for the simple reason they have that inner doubt about there own ability in achieving them, so they lose focus, confidence and the importance of his or her goal.............Why it is so important to read and re read your goals on a daily base and improve on them as you accomplish the small steps, then you can take the next step.... one day, one goal at a time........simple formula but yet so hard to do it....."why no idea"......Whether the goals are right for you or not you have the ability to decide what is important to you in the future no one can predict what is best for us or what we need only you know who and what you lack or need.................to accomplish............
