Art in glass involves glass work that has a more decorative rather than functional purpose and is created by glass artists in studios using some small furnaces.  One thing that makes contemporary glass art notable is the individual creativity and hand wrought aspect. On the other hand the vintage art in glass that was manufactured prior to 1960s consisted of factory-manufactured artistry that was produced by a small team of workers in a factory.

Utilitarian glasses were produced using machines in the 19th century and this made it possible for workers to try their hands at creations that are more artistic. There has also been a modernistic art movement that has affected glass manufacture as various institutions introduces courses in glass making while emphasizing on training in fine art. This is the reason why glass artists started including glass in their work.

Different companies such as Steuben’s and Tiffany’s in the United States as well as Daum, Lalique, Kosta Boda and Galle in Europe have a reputation for producing artistic glasses. Murano, Italy has been in the front row when it comes to experimenting with glass and is considered to be the source of the contemporary art movement as it has inspired artists from all parts of the world.

Glass artistry by individual artists started in the mid 1960s when the studio glass movement took off in the United States. Many novel techniques were introduced and glass programs were included in many university programs in the United States. Form here the glass art studio movement went international. We now have competitions, grants and societies in many countries that are meant to encourage glass sculptor artists and enhance growth of the industry.

There are various methods that are used in glass making and these include form glass making, casting & fusing glass, lampworking glass, pattern-molding lass and free form of glass making. There are also different kinds of glasses such as painted glass, stained glass, beveled glass, etched glass, blown glass, fusion glass, cut glass and leaded glass.

Fine art glasses are popular for their vivid colors, rich texture and elegant forms. These cover a wide range of items such as pitchers, vases, decanters, goblets. cups, jars, wine glasses, tumblers, plates, paper weights, bottles, candle holders, ashtrays, lighters, beads, jewelry, vanity items, beads, sculptures, figurines, glass panels, centerpieces, accent and mosaics tiles. These items can all enhance the look of your home. Therefore, there is a good reason why you should consider glass in art.
