We spoke with Speechless Digital, website design experts based in Essex, about this current trend and they gave us plenty of advice and information on what flat website design is and why’s its popular.

What is it?

In its simplest of terms, flat website design strips away any of the unneeded and unnecessary clutter on the page. It promotes open space with bright colours. Sharp edges are also a big part of the flat design with blocks and squares being prominent. However, it’s important that you don’t confuse simplistic design for a boring design. This is simply not the case at all. In fact, the lack of depth to the objects on the page makes it much easier to read and navigate round whilst keeping the design modern and interesting.

How does it Work?

It works by creating an atmosphere and a theme to the website that means the user is fully immersed in the content presented rather than trying to figure out where to look for the particular information they are looking for. Keeping things simple but effective is the key here and removing any depth on objects, pictures and text are common themes to flat website design.

Typical Colours

There isn’t really a particular set of colours that work best for flat website design, however, its best to avoid colours that are harsh and clash with each other. Using yellow text on an orange or green background might not be the best idea for instance. Keeping the colour scheme constant throughout the website is important for continuity so make sure you find the best theme and colours to match your design at the start of your website build.
