Moreover, as a parent it is easier to have a control over kids at a younger age than at a later stage in their life. They are trainable and ignorant at this age where in they take inspiration from what the parents follow and practice. There are few ways in which parent can imbibe healthy eating habits in their children.
Guide to be followed:
1. Check your Refrigerator: Children will pick up food that they see on the shelves of refrigerator. Therefore, stock healthy and fresh items, so that they have access to healthy food and not junk snacks. This will start as a habit that will eventually turn into a liking.
2. Ensure you Practice what you Preach: Be a good role model. A child will learn the behavior pattern and will emulate his parents and other elders at home. Ensure you follow all those habits that you would want your child to develop. Whenever the family sits for any meal, serve the same healthy choices for everyone and avoid eating food that you wouldn’t intend your child to eat. If you want to eat anything else, consume it in their absence.
3. Make your Boring Food Interesting for Consumption: Children often avoid and dislike healthy food. But if you make the same food interesting they have it with lot of taste and fun. At times they may even demand for more. For instance, shallow frying the broccoli in little oil and adding spices and herbs will attract them towards greens. If your kids hate eating apples blend it well with oats and sugar and make a smoothie. Just twist food a little and add some flavor or another ingredient to make it look a little more appetizing.
4. Avoid using Food as a Reward: At times while teaching them healthy food habits, we reward them with junk food or a high calorie diet. This will have a negative impact on them as they would attach every intake of unhealthy food with a reward and confuse them later when they are to make independent choices. This will lead to obesity. It will make them feel that every activity, every outing should be accompanied by a high calorie intake.
5. Answer Appropriately: It is important and essential to be well-informed with the food you serving. You should have an answer to all Why’s and what’s therefore educating yourself is extremely important. If you are not able to talk the benefits they will not apply those habits.
6. Educate them to Read Labels: Involve them in your shopping and motivate them to read labels and ingredients. Allow them to decide a menu and take decisions in kitchen. Their high involvement will help in learning faster.
7. Alternatives for Good Health: You should always give them supporting solutions for staying healthy and fit. Talking about exercise, gym, healthy diets and other ways of remaining fit makes them more health conscious and instills healthy eating habit. If you are dealing with an already obese child with a number of other health complications such as thyroid, speak to your doctor about when it would be the right age to put them on an HCG diet plan.
8. Cook Together: You can be a chef with your kids in a kitchen. Tell them your new recipe and ask them for help in its preparation. They will happily eat the food prepared by them.
Follow all these points mentioned above, but at the same time remember they are kids. Don’t overdo things and treat them sometimes with food of their choice
