Wan - Uttarakhand
Ensconced in the hills,
surrounded by fields of chaulai and rice, is the village of Wan. A long
ride from Pauri or Rishikesh (depending upon which side you approach it from)
takes you there but once you have crinkly-eyed locals smilingly offering mules
to carry your luggage (the famous Roopkund trek starts from Wan), the
discomfort of the journey is forgotten.
Here you experience the charm
of old Garhwali bwadis threshing wheat on their roofs, beautiful gulubands
sparkling around their wrinkled necks; and pretty ghaseris walking
home with unbelievable loads of grass on their seemingly frail backs. If you
want a quiet holiday, Wan is a perfect village that has fallen off the map.
A shack that dishes out bread
and omelets with hot tea and a friendly mountain dog who sits outside and
entices trekkers to part with last bites by thumping his tail on the ground
noisily, are part of the attraction of Wan. A narrow trail leads up to the
Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam guest house, a temple and a cluster of old deodar
trees that have become enormously fat and intimidating over the years.
Walk around the place, or trek
up to Bedini Bugyal, crossing a playful stream and lugging yourself up a
treacherous slope with gnarled trees for company. Once you are there, the green
meadow stretches as far as the eye can see and mountains loom in the distance.
If the weather is clear, you get to see the famous Chaukhamba and Neelkanrh
peaks.
