Located in the foothills of the Himalaya in Himachal’s Kangra district, Bir is a small village flanked by rolling tea plantations and rising mountains and set amidst a picture-postcard background. There are terraced valleys, winding paths and scenes of immense beauty against which is located a Tibetan settlement which adds to the cultural landscape of the place.

Apart from long and leisurely walks on the winding roads and gazing at the spectacular scenery, visitors can choose to do a host of activities. The Bir tea factory, a local cooperative enterprise, is worth a visit.

Located at the end of the main bazaar, it offers guided visits to see the process of tea production. After this, it is only apt to stroll in and out of beautiful tea gardens just outside the village. Wandering around the Tibetan colony is also a must for a glimpse of the lifestyle and culture of the community. In addition, peek into two of the prominent monasteries located here. Chokling Monastery, the seat of the Neten Chokling Rinpoche of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, has an arresting stupa in the front and a beautiful statue of Padmasambhava inside the main hall of the monastery. In the Palyul Chokhorling Monastery, gaze at the stunning set of tantric murals on the walls of the main hall. For adventure enthusiasts, Bir is a paradise. It is ideally located for paragliding and well regarded by international paragliders. Gliders launch from a ridge in adjoining Billing and land in the fields located at the edge of the Tibetan colony.
