Khajuraho Dance Festival

Khajuraho—the very name conjures up images of the immortal saga of art and culture etched in stone. And against the stunning backdrop of its Chitragupta and Vishwanatha temples, visualise the mellifluous sounds of the ghunghroo floating through the air as nimble feet take centrestage and enthral audiences in this open-air ‘auditorium.’ The curtain rises as the sun sets and floodlights come on, signalling the start of the week-long Khajuraho Dance Festival, held annually between February and March. The extravaganza, a landmark festival of the State organized by Madhya Pradesh Tourism, is a visual feast for dance connoisseurs from across continents and attracts thousands of visitors.

The bewitching aura around the cluster of temples which represent one of the finest examples of the fusion of beauty, spirituality and sensuality, is elevated to a still higher level when it becomes the platform to showcase the glory of India’s rich classical dances that carry with them a sense of spirituality blended with beauty and aesthetics. The earthy and the divine find perfect harmony during the event that celebrates the pure magic of the rich and diverse classical dance traditions of India. ‘The finest exponents of Indian classical dances rejoice and display the spirit of India through their immaculate performances. From the grace and poise of Bharatanatyam, the mesmerizing footwork of Kathak, to the vivacious operas of Kuchipudi, the sensuous and spiritual Odissi, Manipuri and Kathakali, the entire palette of classicism expressed by dance is represented. In more recent times, however, the festival has incorporated modern dances, thus catapulting it to newer heights, which has also helped attract artistes from across the world.

The festival also serves as a platform for showcasing the art and craft of Madhya Pradesh, with an accent on handicrafts from the local villages, thus adding more colour to the celebration.
