One of India’s most important wildlife conservation projects can be explored in Odisha’s Kendrapara district, at the Bhitarkanika Sanctuary (145 sq km), which is just 162 km from Bhubaneswar. It is the subcontinent’s biggest sanctuary space for the endangered saltwater crocodile. The other two are in the Andamans and the Sunderbans. A visit to the Dangamal Conservation Project offers a window to the world of the saltwater crocodile. Bhitarkanika also offers access to one of the worlds largest nesting and breeding sites for the endangered olive ridley turtle, located at the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary (672 sq km) along the seaboard at Bhitarkanika.

Visitors can expect to have some truly unique travel experiences amidst this amazing wilderness phenomenon. An unexpected bonus is the fabulous mangrove habitat of this estuarine deltaic region which is the meeting point of three rivers - the Brahmani, Baitarani and Dhamra - whose tidal mudflats and countless creeks are alive with all manner of life, on terra firma and in the water. It is the second largest compact mangrove ecosystem in India. It offers visitors highly enriching experiences, similar to those enjoyed in the Sunderbans in West Bengal. Birding enthusiasts should go prepared with a good book on Indian birds and binoculars for the fabulous avifaunal wealth in these parts with both resident and migratory species such as the bar headed goose, brahminy duck, pintail, shoveller, gadwall and pelican who arrive in droves in winter here. If one travels to nearby Bagagahan, the heronry there is a huge delight as its unique habitat attracts 50,000 resident and local migratory wetland nesting birds in the  monsoons. The botanical wealth of the region makes it a paradise for the botanical buff.
