Tyre Tread Pattern: Explained

by Jason Roy Tyre City

We have all seen the design of our tyres. They are known as the tread pattern and are the contacting surface between the road and the tyre. They are made up of rubber. The tread patterns determine the grip of the vehicle.

Tread Depth and Causes of Wear

When you get a brand new tyre, it will have a depth of 8-9mm and at 1.6mm tread depth, you have to find a new one. A tread depth of less than 1.6mm is not legal on road.

To know about the depth, check out the tread wear indicators that are built into the grooves of your tyres. These are the small bars placed horizontally around the tyre. Once these bars are visible, it time to get a new set of tyres. This is the indication that your tyre has worn out and minimum depth has reached. You may also get the depth checked by a tyre gauge.

The reasons are tread wear are several. Some of them are:

  • Insufficient tyre inflation pressure. If the pressure is less, the tyre will wear rapidly as the pressure on it is increased.

  • Improper wheel alignment.

Types of Tread Patterns

Tread patterns are different for different types of tyres. However, while learning about them, you will find three major types of tread patterns mentioned below:

  • Symmetrical tread

  • Asymmetric tread

  • Directional tread.

Let us know about these types of tyres in depth.

Symmetrical Tread Pattern tyres:

The symmetrical tread pattern has the same grooves and blocks on both sides of the tyres. The pattern on the inner and outer half of the tyres is symmetric. They are good for domestic vehicles and offer a lower Rolling resistance. Moreover, they can be mounted in any direction, unlike directional tyres.

Asymmetric Tread Pattern Tyres

In asymmetric tread patterns, the tread on both sides is different. They are good for almost all road surfaces and have high curve stability. When you buy an All season Banden Utrecht, you will find asymmetric tread on it.

They are designed to enhance the performance on dry, wet or snowy road surfaces. The left side of such tyres has a chunky tread design to get increased contact area and better stability on dry and rough roads.

Directional Tread Pattern Tyres

In the case of directional tread patterns, they are designed to rotate in one direction only. The direction is only front to back or back to front and not side to side. This is important to get it mounted in a V shape. These tyres Autobanden Utrecht are also marked on the sides for identification. You will find "Direction" or "Rotation" written on them.

The directional tread tyres are ideal for sports cars and the winter atmosphere. They have higher hydroplaning resistance because of the V-shaped tread Pattern that helps in moving water efficiently.
