If you think you know well how to use Twitter just because you’re familiar with Twitter tools; well, better think again. Tools are available to make scheduling of posts easier and to  provide insight of analytics that determines the status of your account (if it’s doing great or not).

Using Twitter is not really complicated, what makes it challenging is how to gain followers -- become influential. Like other social media platforms, you just have to familiarize with the “basics” and follow them religiously.

So, what are these “basic” do’s and don’ts that you have to remember by heart to ensure the success of your Twitter presence:

Don’t

Don’t: Skip the Profile Picture

Will you follow someone without a face? Your face gives you personality, make sure to provide one. Not unless you want to be an “egghead;” take time to personalize your account and make it look real.

Don’t: Be a Ghost

Stop that “I’m busy” mentality. That’s not true. If you have time to check your Facebook or browse 9gag, then why not spare some minutes on your Twitter account? Make it a habit to check and tweet something daily, after all, what is 140 characters? Include this on your daily habit.

Don’t: Be Network-y

Let’s admit it, some have Twitter accounts to expand their “circle of friends,” but then again, letting things flow naturally is much better. If you want to catch attention, provide quality content, engage, interact and everything else follows.

Do’s

Do: Re-Tweet and Share Links

It’s always good to share something beautiful, right? What you read and share tells a lot about your personality and your followers will feel whether you are faking it or not, once “engagement” starts. One advice: Never share what you don’t know.

Do: Be Real

Feel free to post personal insights. It wouldn’t hurt if once in awhile you share something personal, like how much the sunset mesmerized you, or how awkward it is to bump with your crush -- this will make you appear more natural and real. Who knows, someone out there might be feeling the same way like you do, and end up following you (audience).

Do: Pin a Tweet

First impression lasts. Aside from your profile picture, you can write a short description about yourself but it’s a bit limited. If you want to add positive impression, Pin a Tweet that you can relate to or it can also be something that you can brag about (an article that you wrote, etc). Announce your presence.

Creating online presence, especially in Twitter community demands time, patience, and effort. You can’t gain a million followers overnight, unless of course you are a “star”. For brands that want to be recognized in Twitter, it is much better to seek help of digital marketing companies with expertise in social media management and let them do the work for you.
