Indian Railway is one of the largest railway systems in the world having 7500 stations and 115,000 km of track on 65,000 km route. The Ministry of Railways, through the Government of India runs this huge enterprise. Apart from using the online mode for train ticket availability, the passengers can also get the said information by phone, through SMS, or by visiting the ticket-booking counters at the railway station.

Trains with different speed have different names and classification. Fast trains are more costly than the normal trains but these trains are suitable for those people who need to reach their destination at the shortest possible time. Rajdhani Express and Duronto Express have both AC and non-AC coaches and they are the fastest trains of India. Daytime travellers can make use of the Shatabdi Express. This is an AC train with seating only coaches.

The trains with nominal rates are the Garib Rath, Sampark Kranti and Jan Shatabdi. The rates on these trains differ according to the class of travel that the passengers select. The online mode has become the most common method to book a railway ticket. The passengers can also view the timetable and schedule, select the train and the seat and make a booking and cancellation. They do not have to stand in long queues or fill in lengthy forms to make a reservation. Entering the “from” and “to” destination and the date of journey online will give them the list of trains providing service to that particular destination.

Those children, who are below the age of five, do not need a ticket. People who enjoy rebates on ticket prices are the senior citizens and the people employed with the Indian Army and Navy, Government officials, physically challenged, students and widows of the Government employees. In case of senior citizens (women above the age of 58 and men above the age of 60), they get almost 50% rebate on the original ticket price.

Indian Railways has also introduced a loyalty programme called Shubh Yatra. If the passengers have at least 500 railway points, they can redeem it free for tickets. They can redeem the points only if they book the tickets on the official website of the Indian Railways for travel on the First Class AC, Second Class AC, and Executive Chair Car and AC Chair Car.

The common positions of tickets are Confirmed, WL (Waitlist), RAC (Reservation against Cancellation) or Regret (Not Available). Customers can pay for the tickets with the help of their credit cards or debit cards. The types of tickets that the customers can book are e-tickets or i-tickets. Tatkal tickets are also available for booking 24 hours prior to the scheduled travel. Passengers can view the Tatkal train ticket availability between 10 am and 12 pm every day.
