Optical storage is a method of storage where data is written and read with a laser. It is used for archiving or back up of data. Few of the optical storage media are CDs and DVDs. Devices for optical storage saves data in patterns of dots. These dots are read using light. The light source is usually a laser beam.

The data stored in optical storage media is read by bouncing the laser beam off the surface of the medium. Optical storage is an electronic medium of storage. The laser beams are low-powered which helps in recording and retrieving digital (binary) data.
