The Sabarmati
The Sabarmati One of the biggest rivers of Gujarat, the Sabarmati originates in Dhebar lake in the Rajasthan Aravalis, and meets the Arabian Sea at the Gulf of Cambay. Among its tributaries, the Sei, Sin and Dhamni are on the right bank, while the Wakal, Harnav, Hathmati, Khari and Watrak are on the left. Sultan Ahmed Shah is said to have been so inspired by the Sabarmati that he established his capital, Ahmedabad, there in 1411. The river is also the base for Mahatma Gandhi’s Sabarmati Ashram. It is a graceful yet powerful river, and allows you to see it at its best a few kilometres outside Gandhinagar. Other excellent sites to view it include Dharoi Dam, Guhai Dam and Hathmati Dam. These show a river that has an energy, surrounded by lush fields or open plains.
