The First and the Greatest Battle of Islam

The spreading of Islam came with many hardships. Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) himself faced a lot of troubles that were paved in their way by the non-believers. While also the believers; companions of Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) and supporters of Islam had to fight several small battles to large scale battles during the initial days. Sometimes to stop the attack of external forces; sometimes to protect their hometowns and even sometimes to prevent hindering of the spread of the religion of truth and peace, Islam.

The battle of Badr, in this regard, was the first and one of the greatest battles of Islamic history. 

It was a battle that opened a new gateway for spreading the message of Islam. 
It was the first real test of Muslims.
It was a victory after which the early Muslim community felt free to make rapid advances.

Here are some of the most important facts to know about the Battle of Badr. 

Geographical Location.

The region of Badr remains located 70 miles from Madinah. The distance to cover by a car is of 100 miles (on-road) with the estimated travel time of 105 minutes. The battle of Badr took place approximately 50 miles south-west of Madinah near the point where the then Madinah-Syria caravan route wound its way through difficult terrain.

The month of Ramadan.

It was 17th of Ramadan in 624 A.D., the 2nd year of Hijrat to Madinah when the battle of Badr was fought. 

Mentioned in the Holy Quran.

The significance of the battle of Badr in Islam can be estimated from the fact that it remains mentioned by name in the Holy Quran. Surah Aal-‘Imran (3:123 to 3:126). 

Muslims were outnumbered. 

Muslims were clearly outnumbered by non-believers in the battle of Badr with a ratio 1:3 respectively. Statistically, the comparison was;

Number of Soldiers; Muslim Army of 313 soldiers against over 1000 well-equipped men of the enemy. 

Weapons; Only 8 Swords and 6 Armour Coats were in the possession of Muslims. On the other hand, the enemy headed with 600 Armoured Soldiers, every one of them well-equipped.

Camels and Horses; Muslims only had 70 Camels and 2 Horses. While the rival was advancing with an army of 700 Camels and 300 Horses.   

Allah Almighty assisted Muslims with Angels.

Despite being lesser in quantity and weaponry, Muslims won the battle of Badr with the help of 5000 Angels that Allah Almighty sent. The incident also remains mentioned in the Holy Quran. Surah Aal-‘Imran (3:125).

14 Companions of Islam embraced martyrdom in this battle. The names of these Sahabas (RA) remain listed at the site of the battle. On the other hand, Muslims killed over 70 men from the army of the Quraysh including Abu Jahl, one of their commanders. While 70 others were taken as prisoners of war by the Muslims. Muslims treated these captives with thorough dignity and respect. As a result of which, all of them became Muslims except two.

The battle of Badr has a very strong association with Islam. Due to which Muslims visiting Makkah through their cheap hajj packages 2020 often go for the Ziyarath of the region as well.
