Submersible pump [also known as sub pump/electric submersible pump] is a pump that can be entirely immersed in most liquid bodies without malfunctioning. It is a machine that is fitted with a completely airtight motor attached close to the pump body. The convenience of having such a motor is that it averts pump cavitations, an issue that is generally related to high elevation difference between fluid surface and the pump. Compared to jet pumps, submersible pumps are far more efficient because submersible pumps push liquid to the surface whereas jet pumps pull the liquid which requires more power.

Types of Submersible Pumps

According to uses, there are various types of submersible pumps. The device can be used for sewage, drainage and slurry pumping. In households, submersible water pumps are basically sewage and sump pumps whose motors are designed in a manner that does not allow water into the machine while operating. Submersible pumps run on electricity and even though the chances of electrocution are close to zero, they must be used with care.

Under most conditions, submersible pumps are used most often at homes to pump water, but this machine can be used for many purposes depending on the industry and necessity. Here are examples of its uses:

Irrigation systems – Modern irrigation system is highly dependent on technology. Hence, submersible borehole pumps are used in irrigation system to pump water to meet the demands of agricultural and industrial irrigation.

Industrial Pumping – Pumps also have great uses for industrial purposes. In case of flooded construction sites and work areas, submersible pumps are used to pump out the excess water.

Oil Industry – In the oil industry, submersible pumps are used in offshore and inland wells to pump oil from the source for further processing and treatment.

Deep Well Drilling – A lot of homes dig wells to have constant supply of water. Submersible water pumps assists in pumping water out from deep wells for household uses.

Pumping Sewage – Submersible tanks are connected to septic tanks to efficiently pump out sewage and transfer it to safety storage tanks.

Since the submersible pump is immersed in water, it is as close to the source one can get. This makes it possible for the device to pump water out without having to put immense amount of effort. This makes the pump more efficient than the standard water pump which has to be kept away from the source in order for it to avoid any malfunctions due to water.


Submersible water pumps are very convenient. It is light and small, making it easily portable. Since it runs on electricity, all one needs is an electrical point to operate it.

Corrosion proof

Pumps made of lower quality material can succumb to corrosion. But if one procures stainless steel submersible water pumps, degradation of any type can be avoided.
