The organizations, flourishing companies and recruitment agencies often talk about hiring talented and experienced individuals who could enhance their abilities during their work term and take up decision making positions. For quite some time, the focus had been on these A grade employees who are at the limelight due to their performance. But they only comprise 10 to 15 percent of the entire workforce. But what keeps the entire system running? Those are the Group B employees or the solid citizens. At this statement, it might appear to some that who is a solid citizen? Well they form the major chuck of the workforce of any organization that keeps the business running in a proper manner. They are the portion of average performers within an organization. These people are never in the outstanding performance segment but they are good at doing day to day tasks with utmost dedication and effort. They are also the ones who have the higher retention rate than the star performers.

A few years back, nobody paid attention to this solid citizen section, but in recent years, industry experts and HR professionals have explicitly mentioned the importance of this Group B employees and the reasoning behind it. First of all, it is very important to understand the characteristics of solid citizens. They are average performers, good at day to day tasks, perform their roles in an effective manner but lack the leadership abilities. Their performance never shines bright within a system yet they do a job with least retaliation and most quality. Hence they are the most effective workforce a company can have. They are constitute almost 50 to 60 percent of the entire workforce and are also more loyal to brand. This behavioral pattern is in contrast to the star performers who have the greater tendency of moving out at the scope of better opportunity.

Hence it is crucial to look at the well being of the solid citizens within an organization as they are the lifeline of the system. There are certain measures which can be taken to utilize the solid citizens to increase the bench strength of a business.

  • Firstly, recognizing the efforts of a solid citizen is crucial. The management should communicate the appreciation of the effort of such employees. The recognition should also be public in order to showcase the trust of the employer towards these people. This helps in boosting up their confidence towards the organization.
  • Secondly, training programs and assistance can be provided to such people in order to enhance their skills. Since, solid citizens do not have the urge to jump the ship; this step is expected to be beneficial to the company in the long run.
  • Lastly, assurance to such people that their position is secured in the company despite significant promotion makes the bond stronger and builds up the trust of such employees.

The solid citizens have been neglected for quite some time in the past years. But, an organization should acknowledge their contribution for stability and a successful growth.
