Slip & Fall Injuries Must Not Be Neglected – Seek Medical Attention at Urgent Care Clinics

by Patrick Ward Walk in Urgent Care Clinic
Older adults who break a bone due to reasons such as a slip or fall face a serious risk of another fracture.

This is especially true for people over 65 who fracture a hip or those who develop a spinal fracture.

Lightning never strikes at the same place twice, they say.

But it is a different story with regard to a fracture.

The highest risk of fracture is for those who just had a fracture.

The second episode can be serious resulting in severe disability coupled with loss of independence.

According to doctors in Arlington VA, “One out of five dies within a year of surgery after hip fracture”.

Surgeons say even after broken bones are healed, the risk of repeat fracture exists. Therefore patients must be referred for repeat treatment that can stave off costly bills later on.

A fracture need not be because of a major trauma. A simple slip and fall in a bathroom can break a hip or lifting heavy weights can fracture the spine.

If you or any of your loved ones suffers a fall, it makes sense to visit an urgent care facility at the earliest. There is no need to go to a hospital.

The doctors at physicians’ urgent care VA offer timely help. Most strains and sprains and even minor fractures are treated effectively at urgent care.

Most urgent care clinics have X-ray facility to initiate fracture care and provide casting so that a visit to a hospital can be avoided.

The doctor may recommend testing for bone loss and, if needed, prescribe bone protecting drugs.

Ideally a good surgeon is one who not only helps a patient get back to his/her feet but is also a preventer of another fracture.

The surgeon may outline the following critical measures:

  • Recommend blood tests to check levels of calcium and vitamin D to assess if they are deficient. If they are, it can set off issues that are bad for bones.

  • Prescribe medication to strengthen the bones so that the chances of breaking bones reduce if the person falls or picks up something heavy.

  • Recommend appropriate exercises to strengthen supporting muscles and improve balance.

In the event the patient has hip or vertebral fracture, he or she is referred to an occupational therapist or a specialist in rehabilitation for further care.

On a general basis doctors recommend all people to exercise at least three times a week that must include strength training, weight bearing, and balance and postural exercises.

One must never neglect a fall. While most falls do not result in an injury, a third of the falls can require some sort of medical attention or rest at least for a day.

But 10% of falls result in fracture.

Falls can have serious consequences. For elders it can result in decline of function, anxiety, and depression.

Doctors in Arlington VA comprehensively assess patients who come to get treated for falls. They have X-ray and casting too.
