Singapore to update guidelines on fair employment
In our blog last week, we discussed the strategies that will be employed to ensure inclusive growth in Singapore. Another key initiative towards this end is the development of fair employment guidelines for Singaporeans. The project, which is undertaken by the Tripartite Alliance for Fair Employment Practices (TAFEP) – a conglomerate consisting of the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF), the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) as well as union, business and government representatives – aims to ensure that employers adopt responsible recruitment practices and hire Singaporeans based on merit.
As discussed in our blog on Singapore’s plans to update the Singapore Companies Act and Regulatory Framework for Foreign Entities, the electorate’s opinion weighs more significantly following the watershed elections in May 2011. Hence, before drawing up the guidelines, the TAFEP is soliciting feedback (until 24 October 2011) from members of the public on what they think constitutes fair and responsible employment. However, as it is, the SNEF and NTUC have predominantly differing opinions on what would meet the changing needs of Singapore as a nation and an economy.
