Singapore SMEs get a boost for workplace health

by Andrew Chen

Recently, the Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB) and the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME) have signed an MOU (memorandum of understanding) towards making workplace health a priority for SMEs in Singapore. As part of the agreement, HPB will be bumping up its Workplace Health Promotion (WHP) premium from S$12,000 to S$15,000 – making it a 25% increase.

According to HPB, the initial WHP grant, which was capped at $12,000, was offered to help Singapore companies including SMEs and startups roll out health promoting programs such as exercise classes, mental well being seminars and workshops, health risk assessments and healthy eating schemes for their employees.

The bigger grant hopes to see more SME employers introduce targeted intervention programs which help improve the quality of lives of “at-risk” employees for example, those struggling to quit smoking or overcome obesity. It also hopes to help small enterprises implement mental health programs for their employees especially those suffering from depression and other mental illnesses.
