Simple steps to select the right shot blasting for your industries
Presently, most of the industry including foundries, chemical and petroleum industries, forging plants, automotive industries, ship building industries, heavy engineering industries and Indian railways & defense, apart from it other organizations that uses metal they have to buy shot blasting machine. It is to take the centrifugal force of the high speed rotating disk to shot the steel shots to the work piece surface. After processing, it will have finishing effect and generate pressure stress to improve fatigue strength.
If we talk about the basic principle behind shot blasting, it has noticed that shot blasting forcefully collide the shots of abrasive media on the target substance, causing the contaminants to rip off, leaving the sample free of impurities with a smooth surface. This accelerating beam of shots is carefully controlled and is produced by a blast wheel positioned in the heart of the shot blasting machine. Let’s know about the types of technology which is being utilized in different- different organizations for shot blasting process. Generally, there are two types of shot blasting machine-
1. Wheel blasting
2. Air blasting
For selecting right shot blasting for your industries you need to know about the advantages of wheel blasting and air blasting process. To get an insight about these both technology and blasting medium we have to go in depth.
1. Wheel Blasting
Wheel Blasting is a blast operation without air instead uses a wheel with centrifugal force to propel the abrasive against the parts. Because this wheel spins at 3600 RPM with a high velocity and high efficiency blasting operation with typically quickly time cycles. Due to its high velocity this type of blast utilizes metallic abrasives such as steel shot, steel grit, stainless steel shot and grit and cut-wire which are available in different hardness.
The advantage of wheel blasting is its speed of cleaning and the ability to efficiently blast large components. Also, it does not require compressed air to operate like air blast equipment. This can be economically very high, especially when blasting a large component which will require multiple air blast guns. However, the high velocity is also its nemesis because it can damage parts that can’t handle this pressure and you are also limited to the type of abrasive that you can use.
● On large flat surfaces which are better than pressure blasting Centrifugal wheel blasting can provide highly repeatable blast profiles.
● Centrifugal wheel blasting does not require high volumes of compressed air.
● Wheel blasters are typically faster at prepping a surface-by using a mechanical method of sending media at a product's surface
● Centrifugal wheel blasting provides an automated surface preparation option
When is Centrifugal Wheel Blasting Right for You?
● Products with uniform surface without a lot of recessed areas and can withstand the force and volume of media delivered by a centrifugal wheel blaster.
● Product that is a strong enough substrate to extend the high velocity at which media is propelled from a centrifugal wheel blaster.
● Blast products that is similar to each other.
● Better surface profile should be there.
Wheel blasting is a great solution for products with a uniform surface and can be best due to its automated capabilities and faster processing times. It doesn’t work well with irregularly shaped products that have a lot of recessed areas.
2. Air Blasting:
In this procedure machine can take the form of a blast cabinet; the blast media is accelerated by compressed air and projected by nozzles in component. Also a media-water mix can be used in it for some of special applications that will be called wet blasting.
Shot blasting process is used to prepare the surface of metal before applying any coating by removing debris and paint. Every industry that uses metal applies this method in daily practices for removing of corrosion, paint and other films and preparing surface for coating. This Shot blasting method produces a roughened texture to improves adhesion of ornamental toppings, therefore it leaves the substrate dry or clean that get ready for recoating also. Cast iron work is also shot blasted to remove old paint layers.
Air blast circuit breaker advantages:
It compressed air at a pressure of 20 to 30 kg/cm2 and employed it as an arc quenching medium with circuit breaker. Air blast circuit breakers are appropriate to work on voltage of 132kV and above. Switching resistors and equalizing capacitors are connected with interrupters. Capacitors are used to equalize the voltage across breaks. The number of breaks depends on the system voltage.
Advantages of Air Blast Circuit Breaker:
❖ Advantage of high speed operations
❖ Require less maintenance
❖ Suitable for frequent operation
❖ In air blast circuit breaker fire hazard is eliminated
❖ Cheap and free availability
❖ It is easy to use.
Hence, these two basic technologies are being used for the shot blasting machine. The shot blasting is mechanical process of cleaning the surface. In shot blasting all things depends upon centrifugal force and it is fully acceptable by our nature. Therefore one should select the type of machine after comparing the advantage of both machines as per their requirement.
