Silent Hill P.T. Trailer is Even Scarier in VR

by Alessia Martine office.com/setup

Virtual Reality is a huge step forward for the gaming industry, and the kind of immersion it has can be seen from the huge success of the new Hal-Life: Alyx game. But the success these games might have with horror games as players are inherently inside the experience in a VR game was depicted perfectly as a fan recreated the Silent Hill P.T. teaser with the Half-Life: Alyx mod. Silent Hills was canceled by its publisher, Konami, back in 2015. Subsequently, Silent Hills P.T. was removed from the PlayStation Store. Only those with P.T. already downloaded on their consoles could play the game.

The scarcity of the game, along with really good reviews, only increased the demand in fans for the new game. This has inevitably led the fans to recreate what the game could have been with whatever little they were given.

Steam user, AmbientDruth, has recreated P.T. within Half-Life: Alyx. Every repeating hallway, cluttered dresser, and terrifying radio voice over is in its place. Further other effects such as rain sounds, end game corridors, and other terrifying audio files are being added to make the experience more terrifying. Although it is not the first time a fan has recreated a rendition of Silent Hills, this is the first time it was brought into VR.

Half-Life: Alyx was a massive success as it had a huge fan base already behind it, as well as bringing the full VR experience and executing it perfectly earned the game many laurels. One of the reasons why such games are more effective and immersive is because the player practically goes inside the game, and this is especially more advantageous as the tension is almost impossible to escape.

The choice of Half-Life: Alyx mod platform as the base of the Silent Hills teaser recreation might not only be because of it being a modding friendly game but also because of the game’s immersive pacing. Although being slower than its predecessor, Half-Life: Alyx invests the player in the environment and walking tactfully through detailed settings and learning to manually reload each weapon. Similarly, Silent Hills P.T. is all about the atmosphere. Players are meant to carefully explore each iteration of the repeated hallway, searching for items and subtle changes that allow them to progress.

It is obvious that horror fans want a Silent Hills P.T. to want a Virtual reality game; fortunately, the Half-Life: Alyx engine gives the players exactly what they are asking for. And with more time invested in the game, the more will this mod become terrifying as AmbientDruth continues to build out their recreation with additional sounds and triggers. But there is a considerable risk with Konami involved with the news of the mod spreading,  as it will not be the first time that Konami has shut down a fan tribute. But till then, fans can enjoy what it might have been.
