Significance of Sawm in Islam

What is Sawm?
 
Sawm commonly known as Roza is the third pillar of Islam which becomes compulsory as the Muslim reaches his/her adult age. Its conceptual sense refrains from food and drink. Characteristically it is mandatory Ibadah which is performed in the ninth month of lunar calendar typically known as the month of Ramadan. Sawm is an obligatory Ibadah for both Muslim men and women at their mature stage. In the Holy Quran Allah (SWT) says: “O believers! Sawm (Fasting) is obligated to you, as these were obligated before you, so that you may learn self-restraint”. (Al-Quran)

What is the time of starting and ending of Sawm?

Sawm starting time is before appearing the white line of the day (Sun) and ends to sunset. “And eat and drink until the white line of the day seems. Hence complete your fast until the sundown”. The Prophet of Allah (SWT) said, “Whoever keeps fasting for getting the pure bliss of God, thus Allah (SWT) forgives his/her all past sins”.
