Significance of IMSI technology in modern IVF Treatments

by Raman K. Author

Infertility is a physical condition that affects both men and women. In females inability to become pregnant or bear from gestation to maturation is termed as infertility. On the other hand, in males, it is defined as the inability to impregnate a woman or lack of potency. Since both the partners are involved in the course, a deficiency might take place in any one of them. Studies have revealed that in a majority of infertility cases, it’s the male suffering from infertility.

Infertility is not something related to obstetrics or gynecological issues as it is believed to be. It is caused due to a health imbalance that requires serious therapeutic attention and is not visible from outside. There are many reasons for male infertility like abnormality of sperm, poor quality of sperm, low sperm count, etc.

IVF Treatment

Couples who have infertility opt for IVF (In-vitro Fertilization) techniques to conceive. It is a chain of intricate procedures to aid fertilization. The fertilization takes place outside the body in a lab under a controlled environment. IVF is regarded as the most effective method of assistive reproduction.

Treatment Proceedings

When an infertile couple consults a doctor, the diagnosis process begins with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection). This test is performed to assess the fertility of the male partner. An embryologist examines the sperm under a microscope and selects healthy sperms. Next, the sperms are inserted into an egg. It is then kept under observation to check for symptoms of regular fertilization.

Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection treatment (IMSI)

For critical cases where the couple has to deal with acute male infertility factors, IVF experts suggest IMSI (Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection). This process is a part of the IVF treatment for critical patients. It is a more technologically advanced version of ICSI. In this method, a powerful imaging microscope with 400 time’s electronic magnification is used to examine the physical characteristics of sperm.

The images are maximized up to 6000X to study morphological features of the sperm. With the IMSI technique, doctors can examine the structure of the sperm. Sperms with abnormalities excluded from injecting into the available egg. Deformities in sperm structure affect the fertilization process. Moreover, the detection of anomalies or structural malformations is quiet difficult for specialists. In most of the cases, embryologists are unable to detect chromatin compaction defects in sperms, and normal healthy sperms are selected for the fertilization.

Who should go for IMSI?

IMSI treatment is suggested for males who have severe fertility disorders. Males with low sperm count, Abnormalities in sperm cells, etc. Patients with poor ICSI treatment results are also recommended to go for IMSI.

How IMSI helps in IVF Treatment

IVF in Ludhiana is an extension of the IMSI process. Intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection treatment involves the collection of healthy sperms for fertilization. The sperms are then injected into the embryo for further development. With the implementation of the IMSI technique, increases in successful motherhood and delivery rates have been observed. IVF method assures successful fertilization for couples suffering from infertility.
