Bonding with your Surrogate Baby
by Raman K. AuthorParents always share a deep and special bond with their
children. This bond makes the parents take care of their child and protect him.
Building this bond with the child is important as it makes him realize his
self-esteem and worth. The bonding begins to develop during the early stages of
pregnancy itself. But what to do when you are not carrying your own child but a
surrogate mother is doing that on your part? How to develop this bond?
There is a misconception that the intended parents
cannot bond with the child born from surrogacy until he is born and they take
him home. Rather bonding with the child during the pregnancy of surrogate mother
will help you to have a smooth transition when you take the baby home.
The babies have a strong sense of hearing, touch and
smell from the early stages of pregnancy and through these senses; they develop
a bond with the woman who carries them. The intended parents can develop this
bond from the beginning by talking to the baby. They can even send their audio
voice to the surrogate mother who can listen to them for the baby. More the
baby hears the voices of the intended parents, more he or she becomes comfortable
and familiar with them.
Moreover, try to be a part of the pregnancy journey as
much as possible. The intended parents can become a part of this by attending
the doctor’s visits with the surrogate mother, planning a baby shower or
decorating the nursery for the baby. Preparing your home for the baby before
his arrival is important. This will make a connection of the intended parents
with the baby and provide a feeling of parental protection. They can also make
the arrangements like packing hospital bags and preparing meals which will make
the transition easier.
The baby develops in the womb of a surrogate mother;
hence, it is natural that he or she will have a connection with the mother. In
such situations, a transition item is recommended to make the child comfortable
and familiar after the birth. For example, the surrogate mother sleeps with a
teddy bear which she plans to give to the child after the birth, will give the
baby a sense of familiarity in the new home.
The intended parents should establish a skin-to-skin
contact with the baby once he is taken home. This is very important and highly
recommended as it helps to develop a physical bond between the child and the
intended parents.
The surrogate mother should be allowed to hold the baby
right after the birth as it allows the baby to confirm his senses that are
important for his growth and development. Stay in contact with the surrogate
mother so that she can feel the joy of seeing her efforts getting complete.
Bonding between the parents and child is equally
important for both of the parties. Bonding with the child makes the instincts
of the parents kick in, while bonding with the parents make the child feel comfortable
and secure. By doing simple things and being involved during the surrogate’s
pregnancy can help the intended parents to develop this bond and make the
emotional and physical transition an easy process.
