Saving money for that special something

We should always be saving money for that special something… or have a rainy day fund for things that come up. I have never been good at saving money. When I was young I had a piggy bank. It didn’t have a lock on it so I was able to count it often and take out money when even I just had to have something. I never understood those piggy banks that you would of had to SMASH  to get your money out… as I think back now .. that may of been a better option for people like me with no saving skills.

I used my piggy bank as a rainy day fund saver….. heck, it must of always been raining… becasue I was always taking money out of that piggy bank.

When I was in my late teens early 20’s I was a waitress at a private county club. Being a waitress you could go to work broke and come home with money in your pocket. What a great job that was.. it was always payday when you worked. The wages were peanuts because we worked for tips so the wages I got I used to pay the $100.00 a month rent…. gosh those were the good ole days. I had a great apartment for that 100 bucks.

Anyway always having CASH in hand and not having any saving skills it was hard to save any money but one day I decided that I was going to start a rainy day fund and save up for something that I really wanted. I went to the bank and opened a new saving account… the thing is the name on the account was of a little boy that I didn’t have yet…. it was the name I was going to name my boy… if of course I ever had one.  Not real sure I would be able to open an account like that today.. but back then I was able to.

Into this new account I decided that I was going to use it just to save my 50 cent pieces. I being a waitress saw many more 50 cent pieces than most people.. It was not long before I had quite a bit of money in that rainy day fund account. In fact I had saved enough 50 cent pieces to equal $500.00. It was time to go looking for something to spend it on… I decided that I wanted a new car.

Working at the country club I got to know many of the people there. I left home when I was 18 and moved to a state 1200 mile away. I choose a small town in North Eastern Colorado.. because it had a pretty name. I didn’t know a soul there and had no job nor any prospects for a job. Many of the club members thought I was crazy to do something like that but most of them just thought that I needed protection. All of the car dealers were members of the county club so I went to the car dealership of the car that I had an interest in and went in and chatted with the owner.

I told him that I wanted to buy a new car….. He thought that was great especially since he didn’t even have to pay a commission to a sales man for the deal. He walked me around the place showing off his assortment of cars.. he even pulled out a color chart to show me the different options available to me. He saw that I was not very keen on his way of shopping so he asked me if I was no longer interested in buying a new car…. I said of course I want to buy a new car.. you have just not gotten to the car that I want to buy. He said… “what car is it that you want to buy?”…. I said “I want to buy YOUR CAR!”

The poor guy looked at me and said…. ” Oh my dear Cindy, I don’t think that you can afford to buy my car.”… I said… “Wanna Bet!”…… So I made the deal! I traded in my Volkswagen Beetle and I bought the hottest car around at that time. I bought a bright orange. 1972 Datsun 240 Z.. and you bet it was a beauty.. Gosh I loved that car.

So then at the county club there were a couple of Dr’s, the Datsun dealership guy and Cindy the waitress who had Z cars in the clubs parking lot. You know I think the icing on the cake to make that sale was him saying to me… ” Oh my dear Cindy, I don’t think that you can afford to buy my car.” Yep! I think that was the clincher.

The thing is I was able to get that hot car because I made a commitment to myself to set money aside to get something that I really really wanted. Then I found a plan to be able to do just that. My plan was to save all of my 50 cent pieces…..

The same thing goes for people who are in debt. You have to make a commitment to yourself and stick to the plan to get out of debt. I know that sounds simple but there really is no more to it than that.

Target Debt Free is the plan that will help you get out of debt… all you need to do is COMMIT to do what ever it takes to get out of debt.

I just have to add a bit more about that account that I opened…. It did end up causing a few problems. I was sent a letter asking me for a social security number for the name that had been put on that account. I of course was never able to provide one because there really was no one by that name. That was sort of hard to explain. Who opens fake bank accounts?….. Cindy the gal with a bright orange 1972 Datsun 240 Z.. that’s who!
