If you are a builder, architect or engineer within the building industry you will also require detailed drawings of building plans and dimensions with accurate details, so that the projects you undertake are completed according to the pre-set plans and the required building standards. Building plans and layouts are now reproduced in the form of CAD drawings. Advanced CAD technology is also able to produce structural layouts of buildings in 3D to give greater scope for builders and engineers. CAD drawings enable building project teams to execute building plans to the last detail, thus making them essential for the construction industry.

The advent of CAD drawings has led to more advanced technology such as 3D CAD drawings which are able to give extensive details, including a valuable overview, and other building and sectional dimensions in three dimensions. Three dimensional drawings of building sections has given birth to the BIM or building information modeling process, which is an increasingly essential asset used in generating and managing physical and functional characters of buildings. The Building Information Models are electronic files that can be used to make decisions on building projects. The BIM software is nowadays widely used by businesses, individuals and government projects for planning, designing, constructing, operating and maintaining various infrastructures. These could include offices, factories, schools, warehouses, bridges, ports, communication centres, oil and gas industries, waste water management facilities, shops, roads, and other such projects.

BIM essentially is a data set which represents the physical and functional elements of a facility and the knowledge can be shared among the building team and facilities management teams for the entire duration of its life cycle to make decisions. The traditional construction industry still relies on the 2D building drawings which have in many ways become outdated as 3D CAD with BIM compliance is able to make fast progress during the construction.

BIM being is rapidly being mandated for use in the building industry throughout the world, with the UK and UAE leading the way in this. BIM companies have been established to manage the process for developers and builders over the world and employing their services for integrating the BIM process will hugely benefit the building industry as project teams can build with greater accuracy, organisation and speed whilst reducing costs and improving quality. This would result in saving time, labour, and money and the buildings could be built with greater accuracy.
