CAD or computer aided design is a computer technology used for designing, building, engineering and other design documentation. Earlier manual drafting was used for these projects, but CAD has replaced the outdated concept by automating the drawing process. If you are involved in architecture or structural engineering, you have most likely used CAD programs in 2D and 3D. CAD designers around the world use the software to great effect and conceive and design detailed and accurate drawings to help in building, structuring and manufacturing.

How are CAD designs created and used?

Computer Aided Drawing (CAD) is software utilised on computers to assist in creating, modifying, analysing and optimising designs. The use of CAD in designing electronic systems is called EDA or electronic design automation and in a more popular sense is known as CAD or computer aided drawing. In the process of creating technical drawing the CAD software is used on the computer. The CAD software uses vector based graphics for depicting the objects that are hand drawn traditionally, or it can also produce raster graphics which show the overall appearance of the object. The process, however, encompasses more than just shapes and provides additional information on the drawing such as methods, materials, dimensions, and tolerance which are conventions specific to applications. CAD designs are versatile in producing highly accurate and detailed building and engineering drawings and are instrumental in saving time and money for builders and manufacturers.

Uses of CAD designs

Computer aided designing is widely used to increase production for designers, improve the drawing quality and design, enhance the interaction through documentation, and finally to develop a database which could be used for manufacturing. The output of CAD is usually in an electronic file format which can be used to print drawings, and the drawings, in turn, could be used for various manufacturing processes. Computer Aided Drawing is also known as CAD or Computer Aided Design and Drafting. CAD could be used to draw and design figures and curves in 2D or two-dimensional space and also draw three-dimensional curves, solids and surfaces. CAD is applied in several industries and is a significant industrial art which serves architecture, automobiles, shipbuilding, prosthetics, aerospace and more. Other important uses include animation in movies where special effects are required and advertising. AD software is extensively used in producing technical manuals which is also known as the creation of DCC digital content.
