by Craig W. Long Same Day Passport Services Available

Protect Passport When traveling abroad, your passport is essential. It must be kept safe in foreign countries. It is best to keep in touch with your surroundings, as losing your passport abroad can cause inconvenience and delay. You may not be allowed to return to your country if your U.S. passport is stolen or lost. Having an understanding of your options can help you narrow down your options and keep your U.S. passport safe.

Keep your Passport on You

Your passport will be accepted everywhere. Some countries will not accept your State-issued ID. It is a good idea to keep your passport with you in case of an accident, or any legal matter during your stay.

Most cases will require you to show that you are legally within their country. To verify your legal status in the country, they may request to see your passport's arrival stamp.

Leave your Passport in Your Hotel Room

If you don't have your passport, you are less likely to be pickpocketed.

Your passport must be kept safe in your hotel room. Locks and safes are simple to pick, and they are easy to break in. Some countries require that you have your passport. You should check to make sure this is a requirement in the country you're visiting.

You will not be allowed to return to your hotel room to retrieve the passport if you are in legal trouble such as being arrested. You will need to prove your legal status in the country with your passport. This can lead to a long stay.

Make Photocopies of Your Documentation

It is a good idea to keep multiple color copies of all travel documentation. This includes your passport and visa. Photocopies should be kept on you or shared with a trusted friend. Many recommend that you keep extra copies in your luggage for travel. You might want to scan or take a picture of documents using your smartphone. You will always have a backup in case you lose a particular document.

Get a Passport card

Expert travelers suggest that you get a passport card to replace your passport book. You can still use your passport card as an ID while on vacation. Because of its small size, it is easier to use. Although losing your passport card is not a good idea, it will not cost you as much as a book. They are cheaper and you don't need them to return to your home country. You cannot use your passport card to travel internationally. This means that you must still bring the book on your flight. Learn more about passport books and passport cards.

In case your Passport is lost or stolen

You must first report your passport as stolen or lost to the U.S. Department of State. Report any loss or theft of your passport! It is possible that you don't know who took your passport.

It is possible to find the closest U.S. consulate in your country by searching the internet. This information is important as you may need it if your passport is lost. These are the only way to get back into the U.S.

Replacing your Stolen or Lost Passport
