Following the murderous storm at a popular
gay club in Orlando, Florida, that left 50 people dead, including the gunman
himself, the Mumbai police have stated a general alert in the city and have
also begun intelligence congregation to measure the threat awareness to the
LGBT community in the city.
Police sources told The Hindu that unlike in
the rest of Maharashtra, the incident justified preventive action in Mumbai
because of the metropolitan nature of the city.
Police commissioner D.D. Padsalgikar
confirmed that an overall watchfulness had been declared in the city. “All
necessary precautions are being taken,” he added.
Officials said the acumen congregation
process was a pre-emptive action as there had been no examples of the LGBT
community being targeted in the city in the past. The police are currently in trace
with their bases to get a sense of whether the LGBT community runs the risk of
being targeted in the city.
According to sources, the police’s concerns
stem from two factors, the first being that the Orlando killings were a animosity
crime and, the second, the Islamic State (IS) connection. Before pulling the
trigger on his AR-15 assault rifle, Omar Mateen reportedly called up 911 — the
U.S. emergency number — and declared his loyalty to the IS.
The Social Media
Lab of the Mumbai police is presently searching social media websites such as
Facebook and Twitter to check for any movement related to the Orlando firing as
well as the IS.While the Orlando event by itself has been trending on social media
since Sunday, the police are on the belvedere for connected trends that might
indicate a rising influence among Mumbai inhabitants, said sources.
