Moving Out Of Your Parent's House? Here’s What You Need To Know

by Natalie W. Freelance Writer and Researcher

Moving out of your parent's house can be an exciting time in one's life, as people are finally able to break free from the rules their parents have previously set upon them and live their life as they want to. These new freedoms can lead to a myriad of beneficial and negative results, to reduce the strain on yourself and your parents during your big move you should ensure that you are properly prepared.

Communicate With Your Parents

Ensuring that you have communicated your move-out plan with your parents is important, as you can talk through your options with them. This allows them to let you know if your plans are realistic or not based on your circumstances. Your parents have been through all of this in their own lives and can likely provide useful information to help you as you prepare for your move.

You can also ask them what mistakes they made when they first moved out of their parent's house, or even just from house to house. This can help you to avoid making the same mistakes yourself. Talking to your parents about your plans may mean that you can convince them to help you out financially whilst you move which can help make the move much smoother.

As well as this, remember this is probably quite a difficult time for your parents as well. They also need to get to terms with the fact that you’re leaving home, so arguments or disagreements can be common due to heightened emotions. As moving day approaches, try and be considerate of their feelings too. You may also wish to get a small gesture or token to show your appreciation. For your mum, there are plenty of gifts for her that she’s sure to love, like candles or a nice jewellery piece. For your dad, you can’t go wrong with a funny gift that will make him smile!

Make Sure You Do Adequate Research And Make A Plan

When you are considering a new place to live in is important that gather important information that will help you make decisions when it comes to finding a place to live. You should take into account the price of properties you are looking at and how feasible for you to be able to afford the rent.

You should also ensure that you have a plan in place to move your possessions to your new home, depending on your situation this could be receiving help from your parents or hiring a removal van to help you transport your belongings. You can get an online moving estimate from many moving companies to help with your planning. Some companies might charge you for different things in their moving estimate, such as unpacking or moving boxes into the right room, so always make sure to check what is included.

Save Money

If you are not being charged rent by your parents or you are expected to provide a low amount of money for your board you should take advantage of this whilst you can. Ensure that you have as much money saved up as possible; Ideally, you should have at least 2-3 months of rent saved up for the property you are thinking about renting and your salary from your job should be enough to cover your rent, bills and other costs such as food and transport. You should have some money left over at the end of the month to cover unexpected expenses as well.

It is recommended that you should not spend more than 30% of your income on rent. You can cut down costs by moving into a flat or house with friends, alternatively, you could move into a shared house with strangers where you have your room but just share the kitchen and bathroom with others. Both of these options can allow you to save significantly on rent each month.
