Men’s Indian Bridal Jewellery: An Exciting Space

by Vaibhav J. Vaibhav Jewellers
Men’s jewellery in India has been around since ages. For a few decades though, wearing jewellery was considered less macho. Shopping for a gold ring for women, whether for an engagement, proposal or wedding, always was a bigger deal and a more significant activity than shopping for the same gold ring for men. All kinds of designs and options were available for the women, ranging from yellow and rose gold to platinum and antique jewellery. For men, the choices were very few.

Gold Rings for Women

The most commonly bought was the gold bracelet for men.  Few men wore chains and several men wore finger rings. Thankfully, that has changed, especially with regard to men’s bridal jewellery. With weddings becoming multi-event, several days’ celebration, often in exotic locations, the groom’s wardrobe and accessories are given equal emphasis as that of the bride. And this is even more so if the bride and groom decide to co-ordinate their outfits and wardrobes.

Antique Jewellery

Here are the different pieces of jewellery that form the bridal jewellery set for Indian grooms from head to toe:

The Kalgi, or the Turban Brooch

Turbans form a mandatory part of a groom’s attire in several cultures across India. The kalgi is the brooch that adorns the turban. It may or may not have feathers that form a plume. The kalgi is often studded with kundan stones. Some kalgis have pearl or gem studded chains in scallop formation along the side of the turban.

If a turban is a requirement for your wedding, make sure you wear a kalgi on it, for that majestic look of masculine dignity!!

The Earrings

Earrings on men are slowly but steadily being accepted, even in formal environments. The size and subtlety may vary. But they are no longer looked down upon as breaking societal norms. And this, I think, is another custom that has come full circle. Until a few decades ago, all boy babies born into most South Indian families also had their ears pierced and wore earrings, much like their female counterparts. The ear-piercing ceremony for boys was celebrated with pomp.

Contemporary styles are limited to studs on the earlobes, either on one ear or both.

The Necklace

The regalia of a necklace over a groom’s rich sherwani is unparalleled. While the design of the necklace is completely the groom’s individual choice, multi-strand necklaces in pearls or diamonds seem the most sought after. Many also go in for the strands being caught in a gem studded clasp. This could be either on both sides of the necklace, or just on one side.

A thin gold chain is a popular neck accessory for men. Wedding or not, many men wear a chain around their neck, and it is an oft-zeroed in gift idea when you are choosing a gift for a man, or a boy, for chains are age-neutral!

The Brooch

Those who don’t prefer necklaces often opt for a gem-studded brooch on the pocket of the sherwani, on the kurta or the lapel of their wedding jacket. There are umpteen designs available in men’s bridal brooches – gold, gem-studded or diamond studded, with or without chains.

The Bracelet

Bracelets are accessories that add substance and appeal to a man’s overall look. Bracelets can be worn for casual, formal or dressy occasions. And what could a dressier occasion for a man than his wedding?

Whether worn single, or in combination with a few of varying designs, the bracelet can add class to the look of wedding royalty.  Bracelets are available in many designs, and it is easy to find gold bracelets for men

The Finger Ring

Wearing rings, especially gem-studded ones with a religious, astrological or spiritual significance attached, is popular among Indian males. Of all items of male jewellery, finger rings are bought, gifted and worn the most in India. Rings are associated with weddings and engagements for both men and women, and a special ring chosen for the occasion of holy matrimony is a worthy one

The Watch

A groom on his special day deserves a gold watch, though they might be considered gauche for everyday wear. Studded with diamonds, CZ or just plain gold, every jewellery store worth its salt will have a collection for you to choose from.
