Jewellery Style Spotlight: Jewellery Set Or Individual Pieces
When you
enter a jewellery store to buy gold jewellery,
especially for a major purchase like bridal jewellery for an upcoming wedding,
the sales staff will always ask whether you are looking for sets or individual pieces.
Now, this is not an easy question to answer straightaway. The best answer to
this question is a favourite response of most students when they are asked a
question in a classroom. For a question that can have a subjective reply. “It
depends…”
And it’s
true. It does depend. On your taste mostly, and on your budget.
And the
set can mean collections with varying number of pieces. Whether we take a gold
necklace set or a diamond
necklace set, the set could be one of several combinations. Earrings,
choker, short necklace, long necklace, bangles and finger rings – the set can
be in various permutations and combinations of these items of jewellery.
The
convenience of wearing a matching jewellery set is indisputable. You don’t have
to worry about whether the jewellery matches. It’s all there, done and
completed for you. Some people worry that it might look a bit over the top. But
hey! When the event is a wedding in the family or a festival, you can wear
every piece of the set, and feel good about it!!
There are
some fashionistas who think it’s important to increase the distance between two
pieces of a matching set. So, according to these experts, it’s ok to wear
matching earrings and bangles, or bangles and necklaces, but not ok to wear
matching earrings and necklaces, because they are too close to each other.
I
disagree. Most women, when they go to buy necklaces, and find one that they
like, will surely ask, “Do you have earrings to match this?” I’m sure you have
too. I definitely have!! In terms of sets and matching preferences, I think
there are three categories.
The first category comprises those women who
like sets. They like order and uniformity, and like all their jewellery items
to match.
The second category is those who like to
wear co-ordinated jewellery. Not
completely matched, but some aspects similar – could be the gems, the shapes,
the motifs, the colour of the finishing polish on the gold, and so on.
And the third category are those who like
completely unrelated pieces. These people find sets binding, and perhaps even
boring. Not for them the monotony of identical designs on a set.
But who
says you have to wear the whole set? There are so many looks and styles you can
create with just one or two items from your set. Depending on your outfit and
the occasion, choose either only the earrings, or only the necklace from your
set. Even just your bangles from the set can help you make a powerful
statement.
