Meet the Ultimate Honda Freed MPV

by Masashi S. JDM Enthusiast

The Honda Freed was manufactured and marketed in 2008 by Honda and offers three different variants: a 5-seater, a 6-seater, and a 7-seater. It has two generations, the first generation GB3/GB4 was produced from 2008 – 2016, and the second generation GB5 was produced from 2016 up to the present.

Engine and Transmission

The first generation Honda Freed has two engine options: a 1.5L L15B1 DOHC Earth Dreams i-VTEC inline-4 producing 120 HP (88 kW) at 6,600 rpm and a 1.5L LEA SOHC inline-4 with Honda IMA hybrid system mated to a 5-speed automatic or CVT transmission. A hybrid version is equipped with a 1.5L DOHC Atkinson cycle i-VTEC engine coupled with an i-DCD and one motor 7-speed DCT.

The second-generation Freed was powered by a 1.5L L15A or L15B Earth Dreams i-VTEC engine attached to a 7-speed CVT. The Honda Freed 1.5L L15B1 offers a 0-100 km/h acceleration figure in 13.9 sec. The 1st generation Freed has an average fuel consumption of 12.5 km/L and 21.7 km/L for the Honda Freed Hybrid with a fuel tank capacity of 42L.

Interior and Exterior

The cabin of Freed is comfortable and spacious with enough headroom, legroom, and appealing interior despite the use of plastic. The gearshift is placed on the dashboard with windows and electric mirrors. There’s space on 3 rows for tall occupants with automatic sliding doors on both sides and storage areas for storing items like seven cupholders, large door pockets, a backrest hook, a glove box, and front-seat jacket pockets as well as folded seats in 2nd row and 3rd-row to create large cargo space.

The second-generation Freed received a facelift with a much sleeker and curvier design. The exterior is much-appealing and styled to look much better than the rest. The front received a lean-edged body-colored grille with redesigned fog lamps, medium-sized headlights, 15-inch alloy rims, and 6.5 inches ground clearance. The Honda Freed has plenty of notable features including Shock absorbing frontal structure, a G-Con technology, a Honda collision safety technology, Dual Front SRS Airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System, Brake Assist, fuel lid auto-lock safety system, Smart start, AUX Power, DVD/Navigation, and Captain Seats.

In Conclusion,

The Honda Freed offers great reliability, fuel efficiency, functionality, practicality, and affordability. It is also a satisfactory MPV with an exquisite design, good stability, and is cheap to maintain which is a great car to consider.
