Regardless if you are excited about your very first pick set or just researching, you need to know the golden rules of lockpicking. Below we will talk about what the rules are, but why they exist and are of such great importance.

In short, they protect you as a lockpicker as well as everyone else in the community. Lockpicking is meant to be a fun challenge, not for illegal purposes. Indeed, we do not tolerate anything of that sort. We assume you will use this information for fun, education and in a positive context. Here are the universally accepted rules below:

The Rules:

Rule 1: Don’t pick a lock that’s not yours or you don’t have permission to
Rule 2: don’t pick locks you need or are in use

Rule 1 is straight forward. It’s common sense. But it’s especially important if you rent an apartment or office. You shouldn’t pick your lock if you are renting a living space (or if you own a home either, but for other reasons). A good way to apply this rule is by asking yourself “If something went wrong, who pays the bill?” If the answer is your landlord, you shouldn’t pick it.

Many ask about rule 2 more than rule 1 because it’s not as clear. The first is because when you are picking, especially as a beginner, you could break the lock. But there is more to it than that. Some apartments, hotels and motels have more complex locks due to the fact that there is a master key. It is set up by creating multiple shear lines with additional smaller pins in the pin stacks, called wafers. It allows tenants to open the lock but also a landlord or property manager with a master key. Because of these wafers, it’s more complex and can break easier.

The second reason rule 2 exists is because we wear being unfairly judged as being illegal or negative. Being seen by your neighbors picking your front door or an office filing cabinet can send a negative message. If you have reputation for picking locks, you might get the blame when something goes missing. There are other locks you can use and it may be easier than you think to get some practice locks at no cost.

Some people struggle to resist the temptation of keeping to these rules. It can be very tempting to pick any lock because it’s a challenge. But despite this, it’s critical you follow the rules. While there might be an occasional emergency where you need to break these rules, only do so if there is no other option.

While these rules can seem overwhelming, what’s essential is to be honest and avoid committing a crime with your set. Once you understand the reason behind them, it’s so easy to follow them and it will be like second nature.

So use your practice locks and start picking.
