LED makers in India eye business opportunity in healthcare sector
India is rightly called as the land of opportunities. With high business potential for LED lighting in the healthcare segment in India, the Indian healthcare industry is expected to reach US$ 158.2 billion in 2017. It is currently growing at a breathtaking rate of 15 per cent, with US$ 78.6 billion in 2012. The trend represents huge demand for energy-efficient, LED lighting in healthcare sector.
Hospitals in India have chosen LEDs as the preferred medium as electricity is used 24×7; making hospitals as the second largest consumer and greenhouse producers. As LED lighting helps emit low carbon content, they are increasingly becoming the preferred choice for lighting.
Reasons for LED lighting in hospitals
Reduce downtime
On an average, LEDs last 40-50 times longer than incandescent bulbs and 2-3 times as long as CFLs. As hospitals function 24/7, lighting maintenance take most of the time as any downtime jeopardizes patient safety.

Additionally, expensive medical equipment cost hospitals money when idle such as PET scanners. By installing LEDs, hospitals can reduce delays and backlog in patient care, and focus on more important aspects of daily operations. The US Department of Energy approximates the lifespan of LEDs to be around six years or 50,000 hours when operated 24/7 (even more so if using dimmers). This is equivalent to a year for fluorescent lamps and less than a year for incandescent lamps.
Reduced energy consumption
Any and every hospital runs short on cash due to overhead expenses. A significant reduction in lighting costs would be extremely beneficial. LEDs emit very little heat, it does not place any added stress on air conditioning units.
LED bulbs require much less power to achieve an equivalent amount of light to incandescent bulbs.
