LED Products are famous throughout the world, especially in the lighting industry. LED expands into Light Emitting Diode which is a p-n junction semiconductor which produces light once the electricity is passed through it. Apart from lighting, LED is used in various appliances such as TVs and other screen devices. The use of LEDs in diverse products is increasing because of its power saving properties. LED consumes less power to operate which is energy efficient and money saving for manufacturers as well as consumers. The invention of LED was no accident and took several minds to craft what we have today.

Provenance of LED

LED is based on the principle of electro-luminescence which involves the production of photons by applying sufficient voltage on the p-n junction semiconductor. This phenomenon was first discovered by H. J. Round of Marconi Labs in 1907. Round was a British experimenter, who used a crystal of silicon carbide to discover the process of electro-luminescence. Later, Oleg Losev, a soviet inventor reported his creation of the first LED in 1927. His thesis on LED was published in several journals in Soviet, England and many more countries but its practical use was not found for numerous decades.

After that, many scientist explained the working of LED using SiC crystals, some of the names that came up for few decades were Kurt Lehovec, Carl Accardo and Edward Jamgochian.  Finally, in October 1961, James R. Biard and Gary Pittman discovered emission of infrared through a tunnel diode which they were able to prove & demonstrate later. On the 8th of august in 1962, both of them filed a patent under the name of Semiconductor Radiant Diode which was the first LED made by the pair.

Modern Application

After numerous decades, LED now has become one of the eminent forms of lighting and offers several benefits than any other traditional form of light. From TV screens to LED flood light, the device is being used extensively by almost every human being.

                                                LED Light

There are several reasons why scientists and all the experts prefer LED lightings than any other and some of the important ones are mentioned below:

ü  LEDs are not made from toxic material which makes them environment friendly.

ü  It does not produce Ultra violet emissions which are produced by a lot of light forms such as fluorescent lightings. UV emissions causes global warming and potentially harmful to anybody.

ü  LED works on a low voltage which means it saves electricity and that is close to saving the natural resources. It also saves a lot of money for the user because of its low power consumption.

ü  A LED light is an energy efficient device which does not waste energy in the form of heat. It conserves energy which saves the natural resource of electricity.

Light Emitting Diode is not only the most efficient form of lighting but it also saves money, protect environment and is easily maintained. In the developing world of today, it is the smart of choice to prevent global warming and expand the nature’s life period.

This article has written by Mark Jim. He is professional writer. This article is in relation with the Light Emitting Diode. It illustrates the comparisons of LED and other forms of lighting and goes back to the time of its discovery. It describes its benefits and the reasons why it is being used extensively in every way possible.
