Knowing the Manufacturing Process and Features of TMT Bars

by Akash Sharma Akash Sharma

Thermo Mechanically Treated Bars or TMT bars are steels bars with high strength, that are used in reinforced cement concrete (RCC) work. They are manufactured with the help of advanced technology and happen to be one of the latest productions in the world of steel bars. The reason they are favoured in the construction world is the fact that they possess superior properties related to ductility, strength, bending ability, welding ability as well as the highest quality standards.

The process that is used to manufacture thermo mechanically treated bars involves intensive cooling immediately after the bars are rolled. This results in higher strength in these bars. This sudden temperature drop makes the surface layer hard, while the internal core is still hot. The cooling from outside combined with the heat from the core results in tempering. This process allows properties such as yield strength, toughness and ductility to manifest in these bars. It also makes TMT bars safe to use and highly economical. Additionally, TMT bars made of steel are highly corrosion resistant.

If higher strength in TMT bars is desired, it can be obtained in certain ways. These include increasing the carbon content, thermo mechanical treatment or cold twisting and alloying. In India, cold twisting is used quite often for producing high strength bars. In this process, the two main ribs become helical, whereas in hot rolled bars they are straight. An excess of carbon content threatens the quality of welding ability. TMT bars can solve this problem as carbon content has been brought down. This ensures improved ductility, and if it is reduced to 0.2%, welding ability can be achieved without losing out on strength. Joints in this case can be welded using ordinary electrodes and without any extra precautions.

The features of TMT bars include better ductility and malleability due to its chemical properties. They also offer high yield strength and toughness along with more bonding strength. They can be used in buildings where earthquake resistance is needed. They are also resistant to corrosion and offer high thermal resistance. Moreover, they are also reasonable in terms of prices, and safe to use. You can refer to a TMT Bars price list to know more and understand the pricing. There is no issue of loss in strength at the welded joints, and ordinary electrodes can be used for welding the joints.

While purchasing the TMT bars, make sure that you buy only from trusted sources. You can buy TMT bars online, but ensure you notice the identification mark on the bars to ensure they are from a reliable manufacturing firm.
