Moreover, you will be amazed to know that it was not because of the table tennis, it was because of some other sport that this game started. In this article, we will tell you some facts about how table tennis was invented.

The invention of Table Tennis

This is a completely peculier fact but this is true. It was not because of the Table Tennis that this game started, it all commenced with Lawn Tennis actually. It was during the year the 1870s and 1880s when the Lawn Tennis became popular. The game makers thought of creating a smaller version of the Lawn Tennis just like card games, board and dice games, rackets and balloon games and they ended up making Table Tennis. The first use of the name of the Table Tennis name occurred on board and a dice game by J.H. Singer of New York around 1884. Table Tennis was offered in 1887 game catalog of George S Parker, founder of the famed Parker Brothers in the U.S.A but the first action game of Table Tennis was held in 1890.

Table Tennis was invented by Englishman David Foster. On 15 July 1890, an English Patent(number 11037) was filed by him for bringing this game into action. Foster’s parlor table games were a compendium of table versions of Cricket, Football, and Lawn Tennis.

The patent filed by David Foster was a sketch of a table, laid out like a lawn tennis court, portraying the game much like lawn tennis using rackets. So, Emma Barker filed for an American patent (number 454700) on 21 January 1891. It was for a net fixture. In 1891, an advertisement by Spalding in the USA proved that the game was under the name of Indoor Tennis.

Sometimes, John Jaques is quoted as the person who invented Tennis which is technically incorrect. In reality, in July 1981, after David brought table tennis in 1890, John Jaques and Son of Hatton Garden, London, England registered Gossima(Trademark number 156615). It used vellum drum battledores- first seen in a shuttlecock game. But both the games proved to be a failure due to its inadequate ball as the bound happened to be too wild with rubber balls and too poor with cork balls. The game revived in 1990 after introducing celluloid balls.

These facts about Table tennis will make it easy for you to understand the game in a deeper manner if in case you are planning to pick up the game.
