Kill Your Meta Description Game Right Now - Learn New Secrets !

by Sriram Swaroop CFO Of Adhuntt Media

From times immemorial, SEO and Meta Descriptions have gone hand in hand. Writing the perfect meta description that peaks the reader's interest is an art you must master if you want your brand to have better click-through rates. Whenever a person enters a search query on Google and hits ENTER, he is led to the Search Engine Results Page ( called SERP in short from now on ). As you skim through the results that have popped up, what makes your gut go, oh this one seems relatable to me - and clicked on a link. Why do some links on the SERP get more attention than the others?

The answer to that question is not simple. You might have used rich snippets or other latest tools that can make your link stand out from the others. But what is that indefinable particular thing that draws you to one link more than the other - it's most probably a very inviting meta description. Let us have a look at the how you can build up your meta game to get the best out of your SEO.

Keep it Small

If you have worked with Search Engine Optimization you must know that the length is one of the most defining factors that affect a well-worded description. "What is the perfect length that I must be rooting for? ", you might ask. According to Google, the limit is 115 characters. This means you should be able to convey your point across to potential customers in as few as words possible. Avoid trying to go for long sentences that break off into a jumbled mess.

This reminds me of the time when my middle school English teacher told us to Keep Things Simple Silly. Be straightforward and to the point. Don't spend time making broad statements that no one is going to bother looking into.

Give them a Reason

Every person who searches for a service you provide is there for a reason. They want the best person for the job. They want someone who can get the job done in the best manner at the lowest price. If you are a brand that is trying to appeal to the major market, it is time you started thinking about your value proposition. Your value proposition is what makes you stand ours from a crowd of normies. You have to appeal to the customers on their terms.

Using your invested time and money in customer analysis, find out what your audience would love to get from you. It might be a special 50% discount for first time users; it might be an invitation to the biggest Sale of the Year! Whatever it is, once you know what clicks with your followers and what does not, you can just go ahead and use that to your advantage. Keep your meta description clean and precise. Let them know about your big sale just through one Google Search. Such amazing value propositions is what makes a customer click!

Welcome them Home

Your meta description is like the doorman to your website. Do you want him to be a friendly individual that makes you feel comfortable with genuine smiles or a burly boxer chases away even the most interested of customers? I can make a wild guess and yes, you probably went for the friendly guy. Follow through on your beliefs and get your description to resonate with your vision.

Go ahead and make sure that those words count. Remember the two points that I talked about before. Those are actual principles that you have to obey. But this one is more about the warmth of your words. Keep things real. I know I have said this a lot of times in my earlier blogs, but remember this - There are a lot of brands out there trying to make a mark for themselves. Many of them put up this mask that they believe customers cant see through. But believe me, oh they do. This is why, if you really want to impress your audience, go ahead and be authentic. Let this show through every pixel on your website, including the meta descriptions. This is how you are going to different.

A Call-To-Action that Works

If you are a regular reader of my blogs, you must by now know the best ways to write a call-to-action that works. Here are a few tips for the uninitiated.

Make it easy to find - While writing the call-to-action in your meta description, make sure it is a separate sentence. Preferably the last one. This sentence should make sense on its own and be visible to even the fastest scrollers on the SERP. For this, all you have to do is make it a maximum of 4 or 5 words and use an exclamation at the end.

Use First Person -People always prefer a personal touch on their content. If your words have that touch in them, it can work wonders for your website. Instead of using the age-old - "Create your account", why don't you switch it up with a "Create my account". By doing this, you are inviting the user into your circle and this is how you build strong bonds with your customers.

Create a sense of urgency!  - If your store is having a summer sale with a 50% off, don't be shy to show that off to your visitors. Seriously, what is holding you back! Go ahead and let you meta description show what you have to offer. Always create a sense of urgency. You can achieve this by putting in words like "Stocks clearing fast", "Last few hours" or "Special Sale today only!". By creating these kinds of opportunities, you psychologically trigger your customers to go for it as soon as possible. Master this to get the best of your business.
