The Indian government in Feb 2009 launched a very ambitious project, The Aadhar card, with an aim to provide a unique identification number (UID) for every citizen. The project with the estimated cost of 150,000 crores is implemented by Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This authority is responsible for maintaining the database of all the citizens having Aadhar card. The database will contain the biometric and other data, such as date of birth, place of present residence, etc. of every citizen. Former co-chairman of Infosys Technologies, Nandan Nilekani, was appointed as the UIDAI’s first chairman in June 2009.

Aadhar card contains a 12-digit unique number issued by Unique Identification Authority of India. The number is free of any classifications made on religion, caste, region or creed. This project aims to eliminate the discrepancies related to fake and duplicate identities. All the information of a person is treasured in a restricted database and will be accessible to various government agencies using the Unique Identification Number. With the UID all the other identity databases such as license, ration card, passport, and voter ID will be linked. Aadhar card also can help you to get pan card application form online since pan card required any ID card.

In India the poor and the underprivileged do not have proper identification and so they are not able to use services like opening a bank account or having a ration card. The benefits provided by the government do not reach them properly. This increases the social inequality even more. With the Aadhar card they can now get access to the facilities which were not accessible to them in the past. It will help a lot in implementing the Public Distribution System (PDS) effectively by minimizing corruption involved in it. The distribution will not be possible to fake and it will reach to the needful people. With the Aadhar card you can also use it for income tax id proof and income tax calculator as well.

Aadhar card also promises to increase national security. It aims to put a check on illegal immigration in the country, which is a major factor for the increase in terrorist attacks. Agencies will be able to categorize the population, like who are permanent citizen and who are temporary. Government agencies can get all the personal and organisational information of a person by only entering the Unique Identification Number, which is of 12 digits, into the system. While checking the aadhar card status you have to make sure that you have submitted your details correctly.

All the people having Aadhar card will be able to see their data online. They can even edit and update, but only few, information that they have provided, like their address of residence and employment status. At present, it is not made mandatory to have an Aadhar card, but in the coming future various systems will be implemented which will ask for the UID. So, its better you get your Aadhar card ready before any system keeps you out for not having an UID.
