How to set up a business as a dentist

by Natalie W. Freelance Writer and Researcher

Starting a business in a niche industry can be a scary thought when you’re first setting up. For example, starting a new dental practice requires more than your standard setup. As well as having good knowledge of your industry is one thing but having business acumen is another thing.

To ensure you can go down the right path, here are some tips to start a business in dentistry if you’re looking to do so in the near future.

Create a business plan specific to your niche

A business plan is an essential part of building your business if you want to establish it, particularly for a medically-orientated business. There are several things that you need to include in your plan including marketing research, financial projections, sales and marketing. This will essentially be your framework to help you grow your business for the short and long term.

Once you have the basics in place with your business plan, it’s important to then cater to your specific niche. In doing so, you can attract the right people to your business including patients but also investors. If they’re able to see that your business is well structured and secure, the better your investment will become.

Get on top of your finances

Setting up a dental practice can be quite a costly endeavour which means you have to be savvy with your finances and ensure you’re sticking to your budget. Unlike other businesses, you have to think about patient services, dental equipment and furniture and much more.

In reality, the money in your own pocket may not be enough to cover all the costs to set you up. Therefore, it’s important to explore your financial options available to you such as business loans, setting up with a partner or even securing funds from friends and family. Either way, ensure you have plenty of finance available to secure the immediate future for your business.

Location is important

Where you base your practice can be a vital importance in how well it succeeds. Essentially, if you’re situated in an area that’s easy to get to, it will be more appealing for your patients.

Think about public transport links, car parking spaces and whether the building looks appealing - these are perhaps the three fundamental areas to consider. You could be a dentist Altrincham-based but have a speciality in cosmetic dentistry, for example, but as long as you have these three essential areas covered, it shouldn’t be a problem to have returning patients.

Final thoughts

Although not an extensive list, the points above should be considered the most important when you set up your business. In doing so, you can be well on your way to establishing a great dental practice.
