How To Master The Basics Of Being A Successful Realtor

by Renee Helten Founder and President of HIRED Schools

Real estate is a career that welcomes anyone who has the right attitude and drives to the learn as much as possible. It doesn’t matter if you’re a newbie in the field or an experienced agent, mastering the basics and being persistent is what makes the difference between achieving your goals as a realtor and being stagnant. Growing your real estate business is another job entirely that includes constantly developing your contact database and organizing the time needed for all other daily activities.

The top five basic tips for being a successful realtor are:

1. Sending Love To Your Real Estate Database
This is also known as follow up. Keeping your database updated with personal notes and phone calls is an easy way of making sure you’re remembered. While it’s important to stay in touch with your database, it’s key to add variety to the way you reach out. Multiple forms of communication such as emails, postcards, and even greeting baskets are good examples of how to keep your database interested in what you have to say. Being a realtor is not just about selling houses, it’s about providing a good “customer experience”.

2. Provide Value
Know that being the first one into the office and being the last one to leave may be something that has to happen. Getting a running start is critical in gaining the reputation within your database. Figuring out what you can provide your database that no one else can is key in projecting your value. Don’t let yourself become redundant. Once you’re able to provide an answer to their problem, you become memorable.

3. Don’t Be Afraid, Be Persistent
Lead generation and especially following up is one of the major keys in maintaining and expanding your database. Knowing how to be able to nurture the relationships that you make is absolutely critical in being a successful realtor. Having a plan before you handle following up with a lead is critical. When you’re in real estate, wasting time is wasting money. Having a friendly conversation is a good way to break the ice, but having a workable transition to talking about the listing or the clients situation.

4. Know The Power Of Being On A Team
Being a part of a real estate power team should be a goal for any realtor. When you’re with a solid group of people who have the mindset of willingly wanting to work together and are committed to the team’s success by bringing referrals to each other, you’ll be more successful as an individual as well. Being on a team is a way of having accountability without it being a daunting task. Having a team to rely on gives flexibility in time, work, and marketing creativity.

5. Understand The Importance Of Having A Routine
Get yourself into a workable daily routine where you can get the most done in the least amount of time possible. Working smarter, not harder is key when you’re trying to accomplish daily activities as well as the more important things that come up. Having a routine provides a sense of structure along with giving organization to your life. Scheduling your days ahead of time allows you to go from task to task without standing still or feeling overwhelmed. Creating and building good habits is instilled as we go through our routines.
