How to Install the tvOS Beta on Your Apple TV?

There are two methods to install and use the tvOS developer beta on your Apple TV: Over-the-air and Over USB-C.

Installing the tvOS Beta Over-The-Air

Note: Only the System Software gets updated via the over-the-air method. Thus, the apps and configurations should remain on the Apple TV itself.

The steps to install the tvOS beta over-the-air on your Apple TV are:

  1. Open the browser on your Mac and search for ‘developer.apple.com/.’
  2. Select the ‘Discover’ option.
  3. Select any of the available tvOS.
  4. Enter your tvOS login details.
  5. Locate the ‘Download’ button highlighted in the blue present to the right of the beta configuration profile. Also, save the profile to the desktop.
  6. Next, go to the Mac App Store and install the ‘Apple Configurator’ app.
  7. Attach your 4th generation Apple TV or Apple TV 4K to AC power.
  8. Attach your 4th generation Apple TV or Apple TV 4K to a wireless connection the same as your Mac.
  9. Launch Xcode on your Mac and keep a check that you’re running the latest version.
  10. Click the ‘Window’ tab from the Menu bar.
  11. Select the ‘Devices and Simulators’ option.
  12. Go to the ‘Settings’ app on your Apple TV.
  13. Select the ‘Remotes and Devices’ option.
  14. Click on the ‘Remote app and Devices’ option.
  15. Select the name of your Apple TV in Xcode under the Discovered section.
  16. A code will flash on your Apple TV. Enter the same to pair the Xcode and the TV.
  17. Go to the ‘Apple Configurator’ app on your Mac.
  18. Select the name of your Apple TV in the configurator app.
  19. Press and hold to drag the Configuration Profile from the desktop to the Apple TV icon in the app.

Finally, the Apple TV will be configured for the tvOS 14. Thus, you’ll now be able to install the beta version just like any other update. In case, you’ve already set up your TV, all you need to do is download the profile, launch Apple Configurator, and bring the profile to the Apple TV.

Installing the tvOS Beta Restore Image Over USB-C
You can use a USB-C cable to download the restore image on your 4th generation Apple TV, and the steps to do the same are:

  1. Open the browser on your Mac and search for ‘developer.apple.com/.’
  2. Select the ‘Discover’ option.
  3. Select any of the available tvOS.
  4. Enter your tvOS login details.
  5. Select the tvOS 14 restore image for your 4th generation Apple TV.
  6. Hit the ‘Applications’ button on top of the window.
  7. Locate the ‘Download’ option highlighted in blue besides Xcode 10.
  8. Download Xcode 11 on your Mac.
  9. Link your 4th generation Apple TV to the AC power.
  10. Use a USB-C cable to connect your 4th generation Apple TV to the Mac.
  11. Go to the ‘iTunes’ app.
  12. Select the name of your Apple TV when it flashes on the iTunes app.
  13. Press the ‘Option’ key and select ‘Check for Updates.’
  14. Click on the tvOS 14 beta you downloaded.
