by Lisa C. Marketing Writer

Tile adhesive is a mixture that is applied either on the substrate or on the back tile before applying/pressing tiles on the substrate. This is what gives strength to tiles on your floor or wall.

Where you are tiling floor or wall, you will need to make sure that the tiles stick firmly to the surface beneath. The quality of adhesive is crucial to the performance and durability of your project.

The Types of Tile Adhesive –

There are two types of tile adhesive - first, thin set mortar and second, epoxy tile adhesive. We will understand the features and functions of both the types of tile adhesive –

Thin Set Mortar –

Thin set mortar, as the name might suggest, looks like a mortar mix. However, it is designed to be used for applying or sticking tiles on floors and walls.

It provides a strong and durable bonding between substrate and tiles. In most conditions, it can resist moisture and mold growth. However, you will need to protect it from flooring and over-presence of moisture.

Thin set mortar is better when you are building floors and walls in outdoors and semi-outdoors. It does not shrink or expand with change in weather, and helps protect your expensive tiles from damage caused in the process.

Using thin set mortar, you can level uneven substrates and create a dependable base for your tiles.

Epoxy Tile Adhesive –

Epoxy thin set or tile adhesive is a mix of two to three components that are mixed in precise amount, mentioned on the product label. In epoxy adhesives are available in pre-mixed, paste-like form which you can use right away without mixing.

This adhesive provides a high compressive strength to your tile floor. The best part of this tile adhesive is that, it is easy to use and maintain.

Epoxy tile adhesive are chemical, water, and stain resistant. Meaning, you can use them in your heavy traffic bathroom as well.

It is more expensive than traditional thin set mortar.
