How Dangerous Are CT Scans?

by City Xray Clinic CT Scan & MRI Diagnostic Center
CT scan or a computerized tomography scan has usually opted when doctors need an imaging data that pertains to blood vessels, bones, soft tissues and other internal structure of the body.  It involves making use of X-Ray generated combinations from multiple angles and forms that image. CT scans have been beneficial for screening and detecting diseases with ease. There are both risks and benefits associated with the use of a computerized tomography scan. It has so many purposes including diagnose a condition, guide any medical procedure, monitor the effectiveness of some treatments.  It is also used to check the effectiveness of cancer treatments.

Multiple types of research have shown that over exposure to the scanning process can cause cancer. All of that exposure can pose multiple health threats. The amount of radiation that the body is exposed to is not necessarily regulated. Thus, over exposure is one of the un-monitored hazards.

CT is known to emit a strong dose of radiation. Sometimes it can be the numerical equivalent of close to 200 chest X-rays. This dose of screening can result in damaging the soft tissues. Sometimes, when the defence mechanism of the body fails to repair the damage done, it can lead to irreparable diseases.

There is no certified standard of technicians that usually operate the imaging system. It might happen that even efficient doctors can lag in terms of proper usage. Possibilities of multiple tests can arise when private practitioners are given lump sum incentives to advise more tests. Sometimes the need can arise out of genuine helplessness.

Spreading awareness about the damages that CT scans can causes, regulating the dosage of radiation, opting for alternatives can help save innocent lives in the long run. Patients can demand scrutiny of the tests and opt for other procedures if necessary.  Some doctors suggest the minimal radiation use when performing imaging exam.  You should always ask about the potential health benefits of CT scan to your health when your doctor recommends a computerized tomography scan. A small potential risk is also associated with this test as it is associated with radiations that may be harmful.

You should also ask why CT scan is necessary. You should not go through the CT scan test if it is not really necessary.  You should also ask for lower effective dose. The strength of the radiation dose (used during this test) can vary, so you should be careful about it.
