Can an internal ultrasound cause bleeding?

by City Xray Clinic CT Scan & MRI Diagnostic Center
Internal Ultrasound or Transvaginal Ultrasound is a popular process in the field of radiology.  The process involves examining the female reproductive organs such as the ovaries, uterus, tubes and the generic pelvic area. Internal probes are used to insert it through the vaginal tract to examine and analyze the results. The process is carried by the doctors and they insert ultrasound probe about 2-3 inches into your vaginal canal. The whole procedure may take 1 hour to complete.

Process

Patients are usually recommended that they appear for the test with a partly filled or empty bladder so as to avoid any discomfort that might arise. The transducer is placed into the tract. The probe sends out waves which are reflected off the bodily structures and these are mapped to create an image.  There is no any evidence that ultrasound is harmful. If it is used as per the guideline, it never brings any harmful impacts to patient’s body.

Is it harmful?

Usually, the process is supposed to be less painful with proper assistance. However, recent studies have ensured that it can be used on pregnant women without any issues. Since there are no radiation procedures involved in the process, it is deemed safe. It can be used to check diagnostic purposes. Generally, it is used to examine foetal heartbeat in early stages of pregnancy.

Bleeding

A lot of patients complain of bleeding post the procedure. Nevertheless, the reasons could vary. It could be due to existing medical conditions such as cancer, menstrual cycles, and abnormalities in the organs or even inflammation. Experts have confirmed that the procedure does not lead to bleeding in general.  Irritation in the cervical region is also another reason which could cause bleeding post the test. This can be an effective and easy way to examine reproductive organs of the female.
It is performed in so many situations including infertility, pelvic pain, vaginal bleeding, abnormal pelvic and much more. It is also used to examine the placenta abnormalities, diagnose abnormal bleeding and possible miscarriage, monitor foetus heartbeat.

It is suggested that patients undergoing internal ultrasound prepare themselves before opting for the procedure. Getting the questions answered prior to the test would help build that confidence and clear any confusion that might arise. This can be a safe and effective procedure and there are no harmful effects of going through Internal Ultrasound.
