Houseboats in Kerala

House Boats have become an important part of backwater tourism in Kerala. Boats with accommodation facilities for tourists are commonly known as houseboats. A number of such boats have been operating in backwaters of Kerala. Today they are equipped with all modern facilities for accommodation. A large number of tourists from various parts of India as well as abroad come to enjoy the ride through the backwaters. Most of these house boats are equipped with Air conditioners, TV and other facilities. The house boat takes tourists through the backwaters of Kerala. There a number of tour operators in Kerala who arrange Kerala Tour Packages. The backwaters are a huge stretch of water body stretching fifty to hundred kilometers with a narrow outlet to the sea. Cruise along the backwaters is surely a wonderful experience. It is possible to witness the unmatched natural beauty of the surrounding area. The backwaters were formed by the accumulation of water flowing from the rivers of Kerala. Most of these rivers have its origin in the mountains of Kerala. When it rains in these mountains the rivers carry water from the mountains into the backwaters.

Where to find houseboats in Kerala?

Alleppey : is a coastal town along the backwaters of Kerala. It is here that most of back houseboats are located. By road Alleppey is about 90 km from Cochin international airport. Alleppey can be reached by train also. There is a railway station at Alleppey.

Kumarakom : Here also there are a number of houseboats available. There are several resorts and a bird sanctuary at Kumarakom. This place can be reached by road from Cochin airport. The nearest railway station is Kottayam.

Kottayam : This town is located in the eastern side of the backwaters. Here also it is possible to find a few houseboats. Kottayam can be reached by train. 

Cherthala : Cherthala is small town between Cochin and Alleppey  There is a place near Cherthala were a few house boats operate. It is possible to reach Cherthala in less than one hour from Kochi International airport. 

Kochi : There are a few houseboats near Kochi city also. 

For Tourists visiting Kerala the trip on a houseboat will surely be a unique experience.It is possible to enjoy the natural beauty of backwaters and experience the culture, customs and foods of Kerala.
