Elephants training in Kerala

Kerala is famous for training Elephants. Wild elephants are caught and tamed in special cages. The trainers are called Mahouts.  Once a wild elephants are caught they are brought with the help of tamed elephants. They will push the wild elephants into the cage.  It takes around six months to one year to train a wild elephant. After six months they will obey their mahouts and do whatever they are ordered to do. Elephants are used to lift heavy log.  But most common use of elephants is for celebrations in processions and temples.

 

Training centres.

  1. Kodanad – is located 20  km from Kochi international airport.  Lot of tourists visit this place. Elephants are taken for bathing in the nearby river every morning except on Sundays. Tourists are allowed to see and go near them. It is possible to touch the elephants as they are very calm and relaxed while taking bath.
  2. Guruvayur Aanakottil  : is located in Thrissur district of Kerala. About 2 hours drive from Kochi international airport. Nearest railway station is Thrissur. It is about 25km from Thrissur railway station. Here you will be able to see around 65 elephants in an open ground. Here tamed elephants are fed and looked after. There is a nominal entrance fee.
  3. Konni  Elephant training center and museum

    This is 110 kilometers away from Trivandrum international airport. Nearest railway station is Chengannur (35 kilometers). This elephant training center was built in 1941. The center has a few cages, made of  strong wood. Around four to five elephants are kept in cages at a time. Baby elephants are taken care of separately.

     There is also an elephant museum adjacent to the cages. Here you will be able to learn historical facts about elephants and elephant training.
